Duties

Help
  • Installing, modifying, troubleshooting and repairing new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating; steam generation; flash and expansion tanks; condensate, vacuum, and circulation pumps; and radiators.
  • Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil and gas distribution systems, hydrants, water mains, water closets, and air compression equipment.
  • Troubleshooting components and disassembling, repairing, and reassembling complete devices and subassemblies of various electrical systems.
  • Installing, modifying, repairing, troubleshooting, testing and loading new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls and equipment.
  • Constructing, altering, repairing, or modifying components and structures such as framework, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior and exterior trim, staircases, trusses and beams.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Required to have his/her name on a call out list and be called back to work during non-duty hours (including weekends) to support emergency situations or make emergency repairs.
  • Must successfully complete training in hazardous waste management procedures within six (6) months after appointment to this position; and is not required to work in unsupervised situations until these training requirements have been met.
  • Occasionally be required to work with and around asbestos materials. Will receive asbestos removal training; and be required to take pre-placement, annual and termination medical examinations in accordance with CFR 1910. 1001.
  • Will be fitted with a respirator equipped for the type of asbestos being exposed to; and will receive and wear other protective clothing as required.
  • Will occasionally be required to operate engineer equipment such as a backhoe, or drive large trucks, to accomplish work requirements.
  • Employee must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. Electrical - Install or repair electrical outlets or switches. Test circuits using equipment such as test lamps, voltage testers, and polarity testers. Plumbing - assemble, install, modify, and/or repair new or existing utility, supply, and/or disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems, and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers. Carpentry - Build, repair, alter or install wooden articles or structures such as window frames, door frames, inside walls, floors, ceilings, closets, counters, shelves, casing, wood foundations, or similar structures. Plan work from blueprints, drawings or verbal instructions. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work on ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where systems and equipment are located. Works in hard to reach places, stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently handles, lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 45 pounds in the performance of assigned duties. Occasionally lifts and carries items that weigh over 45 pounds with assistance.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside or outside; and subject to heat, cold, and inclement weather. Exposed to dirt, grease, noise, odor, smoke, and fumes. Frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and electrical shock. Working conditions are considered in the evaluation of this job. NOTE: May perform hazardous waste management duties and/or hazardous waste worker duties in permitted or regulated facilities. Duties may involve one or more of the following: management, coordination, engineering, or technical work involving hazardous waste management programs or projects; and/or movement, containerization, storage, identification, recordkeeping, emergency response, treatment, and/or disposition of hazardous waste. Such duties require the ability to interpret and implement environmental regulations; knowledge of hazardous waste products and safety regulations; and the skill to affect regulatory requirements and ensure proper management and/or handling of hazardous wastes. An incumbent must successfully complete training in hazardous waste management procedures within six months after the date of appointment to this position and will not work in unsupervised situations until these training requirements have been met. Incumbent must also participate in an annual review of this training.
