Duties

Help
  • Obtain accurate vital signs.
  • Record data on clinical records and chart patient information.
  • Assist patient care providers during examinations, procedures, treatments and diagnostic tests.
  • Assist with providing emotional, physical comfort and safety needs of patients.
  • Prepare patient's rooms for examination and diagnostic tests.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A personal Security Investigation is required.
  • This position may have specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • Selectees may be required to sign a statement (Conditions of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening may be required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of their immunization depending on the type of position.
  • A pre-employment physical is required. To meet Physical Effort requirements, this position may require an annual physical or medical surveillance examination thereafter.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds may be required.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
  • This position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
  • This position is designated as Mission Essential. The incumbent will be required to report to work during times of contingency operations, natural disasters, extreme weather or other emergency situations.
  • Required to wear Personnel Protective Equipment.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic requirements for a GS-05 Nursing Assistant:

Specialized Experience: To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: assisting care providers during examinations, procedures, or treatments and/or assisting patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADL); maintaining patient medical records/charts; and obtaining vital signs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify for this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below.

Education: Completion of at least a four-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in nursing or related field of study. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

Combination of Experience and Education
: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of undergraduate education in excess of 60 hours (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total must equal at least 100% to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Certified Nursing Assistant Certification is highly desired but not required.

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
