Duties

Help
  • Integrate, manipulate and compile geographic, survey and control data in accordance with Bureau procedures, policies and standards.
  • Create and maintain digital spatial data and maps and other cartographic products using GIS system technology.
  • Utilize mobile data collection technologies to capture and covert data to digital spatial data for use in assigned projects.
  • Recognized MTPs in areas where updated geographic data is provided and when land in holdings are conveyed through adjudicative action.
  • Independently research, review, analyze, and interpret information from various source materials such as plans of survey, survey special instructions, survey field notes, etc.
  • Create web mapping feature services, maps, surveys, applications, and/or Story Maps when needed.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GS-05:

Specialized Experience:
At least one year of experience in cartography or in a related field such as photogrammetry or geodesy, where the work required similar knowledge and skills equivalent to at least the GS-04 performing the following:

  • Compiling information from specified sources;
  • Locating GIS data within a specific database and ability to identify attributes;
  • Ability to communicate and comprehend instructions regarding GIS tasks such as: digitizing GIS data, create a layout, update layer locations.
OR

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 18 semester in courses such as cartography, relevant mathematical and statistical sciences, or related sciences, e.g., physical geography or geodesy. Examples of acceptable courses include cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, remote sensing, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Not more than 9 of the 18 semester hours should have been in mathematics or statistics. (Must provide transcripts)

OR

Combination of Specialized Experience and Education:
A combination of the specialized experience and education as described above that when combined totals 100%. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience. To determine your combination, first calculate your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level. Then determine your education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for GS-5. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GS-06:

Specialized Experience:
At least one year of experience in cartography or in a related field such as photogrammetry or geodesy, where the work required similar knowledge and skills equivalent to at least the GS-05 performing the following:
  • Performing basic analysis in ArcGIS Pro;
  • Identify surface and mineral estate of various federal and state agencies of land parcels using provided GIS data;
  • Utilize software such as Microsoft word, Microsoft Power point, Adobe Illustrator to create specific image files based off provided data;
  • Knowledge of GIS metadata and ability to edit as instructed; and
  • Identify errors within GIS datasets and update as appropriate.
OR
Education: Completed one year (18 semester hours) of graduate education in cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, remote sensing, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus, or a field directly related to the work of this position. (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS)

OR

Combination of Specialized Experience and Education: A combination of the specialized experience described above and graduate level education described above that totals 100% when combined. To determine your combination, first compute your experience as a percentage of the experience listed above; then determine your education as a percentage of the education listed above; then add the two percentages. (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GS-07:

Specialized Experience:
At least one year of experience in cartography or in a related field such as photogrammetry or geodesy, where the work required similar knowledge and skills equivalent to at least the GS-06 performing the following:
  • Performing cartographic, drafting and limited illustration work; and
  • Extracting information from field notes to prepare various graphic materials, numerical data recorded in field notes to prepare graphic presentations of Mater Title Plat's (MTPs).
OR

Education: Completed one year (18 semester hours) of graduate education in cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, remote sensing, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus, or a field directly related to the work of this position. (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS)

OR

Combination of Specialized Experience and Education: A combination of the specialized experience described above and graduate level education described above that totals 100% when combined. To determine your combination, first compute your experience as a percentage of the experience listed above; then determine your education as a percentage of the education listed above; then add the two percentages. (MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS)

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.

Work Environment: Office work is performed in a setting that is adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated. When doing fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests or animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-6 and the GS-7.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
