The Supervisory Biologist will serve as the Director of Animal Management and will be responsible for the strategic oversight, welfare, and integration of NZCBI’s living animal collection across its campuses.
In this position, you will:
Provide strategic advice to the Director and Senior Management Team on policies, goals, and objectives related to NZCBI's animal management programs.
Lead the development and execution of short- and long-term plans that align with NZCBI’s Strategic, Science, and Organizational Ethos frameworks
Coordinate with Smithsonian Facilities and Planning departments to ensure infrastructure supports both animal care and public engagement
Oversee the development and integration of a long-range animal collection plan within NZCBI’s Master Plans.
Represent NZCBI and the Smithsonian in national and international forums (e.g., AZA, WAZA, IUCN, CBSG), and deliver presentations to Congressional stakeholders.
Establishes budgetary priorities and secures funding through federal appropriations, grants, contracts, and philanthropic sources.
Requires career/career-conditional status or eligibility.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
or
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:
Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as planning and policy development within zoological, conservation, or scientific institutions. Providing direct support to an organization’s Director and overseeing zoo operations, including animal care, staff management, budgeting, and public engagement.
