Help

The incumbent is responsible for the unique requirement of the continual supply, 24/7, of the highest priority electrical utility for life safety purposes in the medical center, community living center, direct and indirect patient care areas, regardless of what the local utility provides or allows.

Major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides technical support, maintenance and repairs on all types of malfunctioning sterilization equipment, washers and generators.
  • Uses electronic test equipment to determine nature and extent of repairs required.
  • Checks equipment for malfunctions.
  • Traces wiring, broken or worn parts, leaks, feedback and interference issues.
  • Checks voltage tolerances, amperage, power supplies, wave shape, frequency resonance, deflection time, decay curve, gain, balance, signal sensitivity and similar indicators against prescribed tolerances and specifications.
  • Selects proper replacement parts and modification kits.
  • Prioritizes and completes any technical, safety and/or customer service issues.
  • Troubleshoots the unique site specific major electrical distribution systems from high voltage 15KV to low voltage, 12V, AC and DC systems, and such systems that are composed of category 5,6 and 7 wiring (computer), while also responding to the alternative modification of adding or subtraction of the complete systems.
  • Installs, modifies, troubleshoots, maintains, tests, calibrate, adjusts, overhauls, and repairs a wide variety of medical, laboratory, and dental equipment (electronic, electrical, and mechanical).
  • Follows blueprints, manufacturing schematics, oral and written instructions.
  • Performs and documents preventive maintenance and safety inspections to ensure safe, proper, and reliable operation of assigned instruments and devices.
  • Tests instruments for electrical safety, calibration, and basic functions.
  • Instructs technicians, physicians, nurses, and others on the proper use, capability, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Serves as the first responder to emergent repairs and passenger extrication on 17 sophisticated high-rise gearless traction elevators, 17 hydraulic mutli-building, multi-story passenger elevators in a multi-ward medical center, clinical spaces, and research area's which include veterinary medical units.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/17/2026.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. The ability to do the work of the Medical Equipment Repairer without more than normal supervision. Examples include: Installation and Maintenance:
- Constructs, installs, operates, and troubleshoots sophisticated electrical systems, circuits, equipment, and controls
- Specializes in medical center emergency systems, building wiring systems, motor control centers, and distribution panels
- Manages ANSI protective relay devices and advanced power metering and control circuits
Technical Expertise:
- Plans, installs, and repairs complex systems, subsystems, circuits, equipment, and controls
- Ensures proper routing, placement, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of circuits and controls
- Maintains machinery, specialized control equipment, building wiring systems, and lighting systems
Diagnostic and Repair Skills:
- Diagnoses malfunctions in electrical equipment using systematic troubleshooting methods
- Conducts repairs and testing to ensure optimal equipment performance
- Utilizes electronic test equipment, including vacuum-tube voltmeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and tube checkers
- Employs hand tools and specialized test equipment to replace defective parts or install compatible replacements

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Preferred Experience: Valid electrician license, Proven experience in electrical work

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Stands, stoops, bends, and frequently works in cramped and awkward positions for prolonged periods. Continually lifts from 5 to 18 kilograms (10 to 40 pounds) and, occasionally, objects weighing in excess of 18 kilograms (40 pounds) up to 65 pounds.

Working Conditions: Work is done inside and outside, in hot and cold temperature extremes. Constantly exposed to electric shocks, contagious diseases, moving equipment and machinery. Exposed to the possibility of broken bones, cuts, and bruises. May be exposed to extremely high noise levels, exposure to radiation, chemicals, and carcinogens. Required to take precautions and wear required safety equipment and clothing.
