Help
  • Performs a full range of Maintenance Mechanic duties in a variety of trades such as carpentry, masonry, painting, locksmith, and sheet metal work.
  • Inspect assigned areas to detect defects or needed repairs. Drives light truck in connection with accomplishing day-to-day functions.
  • Perform minor on-the-spot repairs (normally requiring approximately 1 to 2 hours) with tools, supplies and equipment readily available and within time limitations.
  • Sets up and operates various shop equipment such as power saws, joiners, planers, and attachments. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.

The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is:

  • Must possess a valid state driver license and be capable of operating required vehicles.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort: The employee must be capable of working from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and in situations where the areas are cramped or hard-to-reach. This requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Employee must have the ability to lift, carry, and set up materials and equipment. Occasionally, may be required to handle materials and equipment that weigh over 75 pounds. A pre-employment physical is required.

Working Conditions: The work is performed inside and outside, with dirt, spray, and fumes usually present. Employee is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment. Inside areas may be inadequately lighted, heated and ventilated. At job sites, may be exposed to weather conditions and hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders and are subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions. May work in confined areas such as crawl spaces, which may be dusty and dirty. May work on ladders, elevated platforms or scaffolding where risk of injury from falls is present. Uses protective devices such as hard hats, earplugs, safety glasses, and gloves.

The incumbent of this position has been designated as an emergency employee. The term "Emergency Employee" is used to designate those employees who must report to work in emergency situations. Emergency dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to these employees. The employees who occupy these positions may be required to report for duty in any situation that prevents significant numbers of employees in the local area from reporting for work on time or which requires agencies to close all or part of their activities.

Drug-Free Workplace Policy

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is committed to maintaining a safe, drug-free workplace. All DLA employees are required to refrain from illegal drug use on and off duty. DLA conducts pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and random drug testing.

Applicants tentatively selected for employment in testing designated positions will undergo a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Refusal to undergo testing or testing positive for illegal drugs will result in withdrawal of the tentative job offer and a six-month denial of employment with DLA from the date of the drug test. Employees in drug testing designated positions are subject to random drug testing.

The DLA drug testing panel tests for the following substances: marijuana, cocaine, opiates, heroin, phencyclidine, amphetamines, methamphetamines, fentanyl, nor fentanyl, methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), and opioids.

ADVISORY: Use of cannabidiol (CBD) products may result in a positive drug test for marijuana. DLA employees are subject to Federal law and under Federal law, Marijuana is a Schedule I drug and is illegal.
