Duties

Help

Provides customer support for retail sales of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) stamps, envelopes, and postal cards using an accountable drawer containing postal products and cash. Maintains a supply of stamps and other items for retail sales. Issues and cashes domestic USPS money orders, following USPS and Senate guidelines. Ensures stamp and retail inventories are adequately stocked. Provides information to patrons concerning USPS regulations, mailing restrictions, rates, and other matters involving postal transactions. Performs as a notary public. Other duties as assigned.

  • Serves as a Notary Public.

Required Work Experience

  • At least 2 years of relevant customer service/ cashier experience.

Required Special Skills/ Knowledge

  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to understand basic accounting practices.
  • Knowledge in Microsoft products.

Desired Qualifications 

  • Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage courteously and professionally with a diverse customer base.
  • Experience handling cash and maintaining an accountable drawer with accuracy and integrity.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly in recordkeeping and transaction processing.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, customer-driven environment while managing multiple tasks.
  • Familiarity with retail systems software, or the ability to learn office-specific systems such as Retail Systems Software (RSS).

Working Conditions

  • Since this position requires onsite presence in support of the U.S. Senate when in session, this position requires the employee to be available and prepared to work during government shutdowns, in inclement weather, on holidays, and during late night, overnight, and weekend sessions. In the context of government furloughs, this position is considered excepted.
  • This position directly supports essential services of the U.S. Senate. As such, this position requires the employee be available and prepared to work during government shutdowns, in inclement weather, on holidays, weekends, and during late nights to ensure essential services to the Senate continue without interruption. In the context of government furloughs, this position is considered excepted.
  • Work requires extended periods of being sedentary, bending, and safely lifting objects up to 100 pounds of shared weight.
  • Exposes employees to dust.
  • Employees are required to wear a uniform.

Education

High School/GED.

Senate

The Office of the Sergeant at Arms (SAA) is the largest in size of staff and budget in the Senate. It is responsible for all Senate computers and technology support services, recording and photographic services, printing and graphics services, and telecommunications services. The SAA also provides assistance to all Senate offices with their staffing, mailing, purchasing, and financial needs. The offices of the SAA that are responsible for providing these and other services include Capitol Facilities, the Operations Division, Customer Relations, Financial Operations, Human Resources, and Information Security. The SAA also shares responsibility for the U.S. Capitol Police, the Senate Page Program, the Senate Office of Training and Development, and the Capitol Telephone Exchange. The Sergeant at Arms is an excepted service agency. Employment with the Sergeant at Arms does not confer the "Competitive Status" that generally results from selection and service in Competitive Service agencies.
