Duties

Help

Disassemble, examine, repair, modify, overhaul, reassemble, test, and troubleshoot a variety of complex aircraft mechanical components and assemblies requiring extensive aligning, fitting, adjusting, and troubleshooting sequences.

Set up and operate test equipment to accomplish functional and operational tests and calibration of aircraft mechanical components and assemblies such as main transmissions and makes adjustments and alignments to ensure they are functioning properly.

Utilize special jigs and fixtures, lapping machines, drill presses, grinders, sanders, and other power and hand tools to perform the day-to-day work.

Accomplish operational and maintenance record keeping, both manual and automated, associated with the work.

Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

TARGETED POSITION: This position is a developmental WG-09 Target WG-10 position. This position may be filled at any grade level. Individual selected may be promoted without further competition, upon meeting all legal and regulatory requirements. Starting salary indicated on this vacancy announcement is for the (WG-09). Attainment of knowledge, skills, and abilities is required before promotion to the next higher grade and is dependent on demonstrated ability to perform the duties of the next higher grade level, meeting all regulatory requirements, and recommendation for promotion by the supervisor. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed. Military Spouse candidates exercising their preference will be placed at the full performance level, if considered to be best qualified and selected.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8800 Aircraft Overhaul Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  • Use of Measuring Instruments
  • Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)
  • Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Trouble shooting

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Frequently handles objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, and occasionally objects weighing up to 70 pounds with assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment. Required to lift, reach, bend, walk, pull, push, sit, and stand for prolonged periods of time. Required to reach and work in awkward or cramped positions when placing items in test stands.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in clean, well-lighted, and well ventilated areas. Frequently exposed to loud noise from the movement of machinery and test equipment, to the possibility of cuts, burns, strains, electrical shock, and abrasions from handling equipment or from moving parts of machinery; and to unpleasant conditions from dirt, solvents, fuel, toxic fumes, grease, and gases. Floor surfaces may be wet, oily, or slippery. Various protective devices such as ear plugs, face shields, gloves, safety shoes, and safety glasses are used.
