Help

  • Performs procedures such as arthrograms, therapeutic injections, DEXA, G.I. series, and Pain /SDS c-arm cases.
  • Sets up the X-ray room.
  • Assures that sterile supplies, local anesthetics, contrast materials, catheters, and other required equipment are present and laid out. Independently makes routine radiographic examinations of head, trunk, and extremities for diagnosis of illness or injuries.
  • Captures computerized radiographs, applies an algorithm, configures the image and verifies patient information before transmitting them to the picture archive system.
  • Image manipulation and transmission are critical in computerized radiography; lost data can only be recaptured by repeating the radiograph.
  • Work in conjunction with the other PACS administrator to serve as a liaison for IRM, Imaging, Biomedical employees, and clinical users to ensure the PACS system is configured to optimize Imaging and clinical operations as well as distribution capabilities.
  • Works closely with the first line PACS administrator to perform daily operations of the PACS system.
  • Monitors PACS and related systems including application systems, networking interface software and system administrative software.
  • Evaluates the system performance by utilizing various tools, capacity planning, and imaging management/maintenance to adjust system and operation parameters as necessary.
  • Oversees the aspects of implementation of software and upgrades to the PACS system and proactively identifies any potential issues communicating them to the Chief technologist and first line PACS administrator.
  • Coordinates with first line PACS Administrator to identify and determine training priorities.
  • Conducts and administers training programs, develops and improves training guidance.
  • Provides training to radiologists/physicians and technologists in proper and efficient use of imaging hardware and software and in use of Vista and CPRS software.
  • Coordinates with clinical service
  • Clinical Application Coordinators (CACs) in training and development of instructional materials for display of radiographic images at clinical workstations.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/29/2025.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy).
  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from (other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT)(R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammograph (M) duties performed independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.
  • English Language Proficiency. RTs/RRTs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. ยง 7403(f).

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates:

Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist GS-10:

Experience:
At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-09 directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.

Picture Archive Communication System (PACS) Technologist. The PACS technologist provides support and troubleshoots system application issues and instructs users in the proper operation of digital image processing, storage, and display systems. The technologist performs VistA radiology, VistA imaging, and PACS support activities and general ADPAC duties including user access control. The technologist coordinates contingency plans during equipment downtimes and initiates repair requests with appropriate services or vendors. The technologist provides oversight of hardware relating to PACS display workstations, applications, speech recognition hardware, and other medical imaging hardware. The technologist provides training to radiologists, technologists, and other clients in the proper and efficient use of imaging hardware and software of the integrated PACS and VistA imaging systems. The technologist provides instruction and guidance in daily operations of the ancillary systems such as: speech recognition dictation, dose reporting systems, contrast reporting systems, etc. The incumbent may function as a DRT which may include complex modalities such as CT, MR, mammography, ultrasound, and/or IR. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following:
  • Ability to provide support and troubleshoot system application and hardware issues and instruct users in the proper operation of digital image processing, storage and display systems.
  • Ability to perform VistA radiology, VistA imaging, and PACS support activities and general ADPAC duties including user access control.
  • Ability to initiate repair requests with appropriate services or vendors.
  • Knowledge of PACS system infrastructure and functionality.
  • Ability to provide training to all user levels in the efficient use of imaging hardware and software of the integrated PACS system.
  • Knowledge of specific positioning, technique, and imaging procedures so he/she will be able to perform and reconcile image information correctly and efficiently during technical post processing and evaluation.

Probationary Period: The first two year of continuous service in the same or similar position of a preference eligible in the excepted service is a trial period. The first 2 years of continuous service in the same or similar position of an individual in the excepted service (other than a preference eligible), is a trial period.

Physical Requirements: Light to Moderate lifting and carrying, up to 44 pounds; straight pulling; pushing; reaching at and above shoulders; use of both hands and fingers required; walking and/or standing (6-8hours); crawling; kneeling; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
