Duties

Help
  • Obtain serving utensils and equipment needed to set up and maintain inpatient and cafeteria serving lines and galley work stations.
  • Supply hot foods for serving lines and foods for sandwich bar and grill.
  • On the inpatient tray assembly line, portion servings according to menu selections identified on patient menus while following established serving sizes standards.
  • Provide carts and trash containers for soiled meal trays and trash in officer dining rooms.
  • Assembles simple sandwiches and pack boxed/bagged meals.
  • Load pot/pan in dishwashing machine and stack and store clean cookware.
  • Follow specific oral and written instructions when changes or new assignments are made.
  • Use some judgment in deciding that the standards of sanitation, attractiveness, timeliness, courtesy, etc., are met upon direct serving and individual portioning of foods/beverages.
  • Deliver and obtain meal trays from inpatient units.
  • Thoroughly wash and sanitize pots/pans and other cookware when assigned.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 55 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a two-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Food Service Worker ~ without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform the common duties of a Food Service Worker that include washing dishes, pots and pans, either manually or by use of mechanical equipment, cleaning spaces under and behind kitchen equipment and plating food on a tray. I work under supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion make sure they are properly performed - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort- Employee must occasionally lift up to 55 pounds, e.g., filling milk dispenser, frequently lift or push moving objects weighing up to 30 pounds, e.g., lifting loaded dish racks, pushing loaded meal tray carts. Work is performed requires stooping, bending, turning side to side, reaching, stretching over head, and prolonged standing and walking, and occasionally walking up to four flights of stairs at a time, e.g., delivering meal trays during elevator breakdowns.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS - Areas are often uncomfortably warm and noisy particularly in the scullery. May be exposed to minor cuts, bruises, burns, and scalds. There is danger of slipping on floors which are wet from mopping, or where spills have occurred. May be exposed to temperature extremes when working in the scullery or galley, e.g., near dishwashing machine, near ovens, in walk-in refrigerator.
