Duties

Help

  • Providesemergency911anddispatching services.
  • Maintains maps, checklists and charts, including automated programs.
  • Operates and maintains telephones, automated data processing equipment, printers, recorders, facsimile equipment, and other devices installed in the dispatch center.
  • Prepares and maintains reports and records relating to emergency responses.
  • Participates in all areas of the fire protection training program relating to the operations of the dispatch center and perform work in safe manner.

  • Incumbent will be required to obtain International Fire Service Accreditation Congress Certification; Hazardous Materials Awareness and Telecommunicator Level I/II, within 1 year of appointment.
  • Incumbent is required to work an alternate work schedule which requires an uncommon tour of duty (including weekends and holidays).
  • Incumbent is required to perform critical services regardless of weather conditions or base closure and report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled work time.
  • Required to respond on off-duty time when requested, stay over until an emergency has been terminated, or until properly relieved by a qualified dispatcher.
  • Incumbent must participate in recurrent proficiency training, as required. May be required to participate in contingency situations, real world, and exercise, as directed.
  • May be required to travel TDY as directed by management.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use.
  • This position has been designated as Non-Critical Sensitive. The employee may be required to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance as a condition of employment.

Qualifications

Conditions of Employment Continued:

  • Works in close harmony with supervisors' co-workers and others during day-to-day routines and during emergencies. Is required to maintain good working relationships with on and off-base: agencies, maintaining a consistently courteous attitude at all times. Remain calm during emergency situations.
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Clerical and Administrative Support Positions, Dispatching Series 2151.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-04 level in the Federal service which includes: Knowledge of a body of standardized transportation regulations, procedures, operations and federal and state laws, policies and procedures related to the fleet management function to perform a full range of dispatching duties and resolve recurring problems. Knowledge of geographic area served. Knowledge of the characteristics and capacity of the transportation equipment being dispatched to resolve recurring problems and coordinate actions. Knowledgeable of vehicle safety rules, regulations, and guidance.

EDUCATION:
Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  1. Knowledge of fire communication and emergency vehicle dispatch operations.
  2. Knowledge of basic computer operations to include word processing, retrieval, and input of data. A qualified typist is not required.
  3. Knowledge of location and availability of emergency apparatus, the kind of apparatus, and equipment needed for the emergency at hand.
  4. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing using a calm and stable demeanor while dealing with emergency situations.
  5. Ability to work independently without immediate supervision.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
