Responsible for verbatim reporting of congressional proceedings, including floor activities, business meetings, committee and subcommittee hearings, markups, and caucus meetings; responsible for the general understanding of legislative and parliamentary nuances related to the Congressional Record; produce transcripts in a timely fashion while maintaining the highest degree of confidentiality of secret and top-secret documents.

Duties

Help

1)  Accurate reporting of congressional proceedings, floor activities, hearings, and caucus meetings.

2)  Utilization of proper English grammar and punctuation in accordance with the Government Publishing Office Style Manual.

3)  Use of parliamentary language consistent with committee rules procedures to reflect actions taken by Congress.

4)  Edit and proofread transcripts.

5)  Collect and insert all appropriate documents from proceedings to reflect actions taken.
 
6)  Understands and supports other services and areas of the Office of Official Reporters.

7)  Accepts performance-based criticism and direction, meets attendance requirements as established by the office, and works a flexible schedule including long hours, nights, and weekends when necessary.

8)  Maintains a good working relationship with other Office of Official Reporters staff, works cooperatively and courteously with others, works well under pressure, and handles stress appropriately.

9)  Performs other official duties as assigned.

  • Candidate is expected to pass resume review, interview(s), and an assessment to be considered qualified.

Qualifications

Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner. Ability to perform the major duties described above. Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in fulfillment of responsibilities. Knowledge of office policies, practices, and procedures. Strong organizational skills required. Extensive knowledge and experience in reporting and ability to report multi-voice hearings on various subject matters at very high speeds. Expert knowledge of English spelling and vocabulary and the Rules and procedures of the House. A National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) proficiency certification or similar certification from any State or jurisdiction is strongly preferred. National Security Clearance is required. This position is identified as a Test Designated Position and is subject to random drug testing. Must have familiarity with the congressional legislative process, have an analytical mind, and be detail oriented.
