Duties

Help
  • Perform maintenance on general powerhouse mechanical equipment including identification and correction of problems causing mechanical equipment malfunctions.
  • Conduct periodic and unscheduled maintenance and/or repair on equipment common to hydroelectric facilities.
  • Perform machine work including shaping, turning, boring, grinding, milling, layout and assembly of finished pieces into a final product.
  • Operate shapers, milling machines, lathes, drill presses, grinders, sheet metal shaping, and cutting machines.
  • Perform various types of welding (oxygen-acetylene, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Tungstun Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding); cutting (oxygen-acetylene, oxygen-propane, carbon arc, plasma); brazing and soldering operations.
  • Perform other support duties such as installing and repairing piping systems.

  • Position requires an initial physical and annual or periodic testing requirements as part of a Medical Surveillance Program (MSP).
  • The position requires the ability to lift heavy objects (up to 45 pounds) specific to the position.

  • Current career or career-conditional employees or serving on an excepted service Veteran's Recruitment Appointment (VRA) with the US Army Corps of Engineers, Northwestern Division, Seattle District at the Albeni Falls Dam Project currently working in a non-supervisory Power Trades capacity and paid from the Pacific Northwest Regional Power Rate Schedule at the rate of a TC-I.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a POWER PLANT MECHANIC (DUAL RATE) without more than normal supervision. Have the ability to perform common Power Plant Mechanic duties. Ability to work in a crew of journey level mechanics and can assume responsibility for leading in the accomplishment of tasks within an industrial setting. Work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: The incumbent must have physical endurance to work for prolonged periods in cramped, poorly accessible sites when repairing or servicing installed equipment. Physical effort requires prolonged standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, twisting, and lifting and carrying objects frequently weighing up to, and occasionally over, 45 pounds. Machinist work requires acute dexterity.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in the machine shop, in the powerhouse and other project structures and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, heights, oils, greases, confined areas, dust, dirt, water, heat or cold. Also, may be exposed to odors, fumes and/or moving and energized equipment. Must wear appropriate safety equipment and protective clothing and successfully complete and maintain all occupational health requirements.
