Duties

Help
  • You will serve as a firefighter performing augmented skills of a credentialed Emergency Medical Technician (Basic) and Hazardous Materials Technician.
  • You will be responsible for inspecting structures and hazardous areas for compliance with Marine Corps Orders, Base Orders on fire regulations and National Fire Codes.
  • You will respond to any release of hazardous materials, munitions, and fires at various storage sites, in vehicles or vessels used to transport these materials.
  • You will perform offensive and defensive firefighting operations on incidents involving structures, aircrafts, and wildland fire settings.
  • You will respond to medical emergencies to provide for the rescue and on scene stabilization for victims of fire, sudden illness, accidental injuries, childbirth, and other events requiring medical personnel.

  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • Must meet all minimum DoDI6055.6M Fire and Emergency Services Minimum Qualification Standards and Certification requirements listed below.
  • Must possess and maintain the following certifications: Firefighter I and II; Airport Firefighter; Hazmat Awareness and Operations; Driver Operator Pumper; Driver Operator Aerial.
  • Must possess and maintain a National Registry or North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
  • Must obtain and maintain a North Carolina Class A non-CDL and government driver’s license within 120 days.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • Selectee must be able and willing to work varying and/or rotating shifts and the selectee must be willing to work a 72 hour work week or 24 hour on/off work schedule.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card with travel and purchase authority.

Qualifications

GS-06:
Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Serving as a Firefighter administering emergency medical treatment to include but not limited to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and performing rescues in confined spaces and/or auto extrications; performing structural firefighting operations; AND responding to hazardous material emergency operations.

Examples of qualifying experience include:

  • Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade.
  • Rescue operations.
  • Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards.
  • Operation of fire communications equipment.
  • Controlling hazardous materials incidents.
  • Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.
GS-05:
Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Serving as a Firefighter responding to fires, hazardous material emergencies AND administering emergency care.

Examples of qualifying experience include:
  • Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade.
  • Rescue operations.
  • Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards.
  • Operation of fire communications equipment.
  • Controlling hazardous materials incidents.
  • Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.

Education

In lieu of the specialized experience listed in the Qualifications section, you may qualify based on education or equivalent combination of education and experience, as follows:

GS-05 ONLY:

  • I have successfully completed a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university with major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study OR
  • I have a combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. My percentage of the required education plus my percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.
