About the Position: This position is located at the Logistics Readiness Center (LRC), U.S. Military Academy, West Point. Located in the scenic Hudson River valley, only 50 miles from New York City, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point is a four-year academic institution, a nationally-renowned historic site, and the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. The undergraduates, known as cadets, are commissioned as officers in the US Army upon graduation.

Duties

Help
  • Serve as a Food Service Work Inspector in a government-owned, contractor-operated dining facility.
  • Inspect contractor performance of various operations through visual inspection and reading temperature gauges.
  • Use sampling guides selected by the supervisor to determine areas, tables, and/or functions to be inspected.
  • Observe all areas for which the contractor is responsible and document deficiencies.
  • Take immediate corrective action to correct unsatisfactory conditions.
  • Prepare reports of deficiencies observed during inspections.
  • Prepare requests for equipment maintenance, and in case of after-hours equipment breakdown, notify appropriate personnel for emergency repairs.

  • This position requires the incumbent to use personal protective equipment/safety gear provided by the employer.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary, the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to Inspect. Ability to do the work of a Food Service Work Inspector without more than normal supervision to include: (1) inspecting contractor performance through visual inspection and/or reading of temperature gauges; (2) preparing reports of deficiencies observed during inspections; and (3) understanding contract specifications in order to ensure compliance with the service contract. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work regularly requires extended periods of standing or walking while performing duties at the United States Military Academy (USMA) and Camp Buckner.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office and the Cadet Mess feeding area, which are adequately heated, lighted and ventilated. Surfaces may be slippery. Works a rotating shift which involves weekend work. The work may require the employee to travel to Camp Buckner or to various other locations to conduct inspections.
