Serves as the technical authority in industrial hygiene/occupational and environmental health/safety for the agency.
Provides complete and current industrial hygiene and environmental health expertise in accordance with OSHA, EPA, DOD, and DA guidelines and regulations.
Reviews, develops, and recommends policies, regulations; special studies, guidance, and technical documents regarding occupational/ environmental health and safety.
Reviews industrial hygiene/occupational and environmental health/safety technical aspects of HTRW site investigative and remedial design documents submitted to the district's HTRW Design Center.
Analyzes scopes of work, plans, specifications, reports, etc. for adequacy of design and compliance with policy, orders, regulations, applicable directives, and prepares written comments for response and action by the document preparer.
Prepares and presents clear, concise and informative training courses, workshops and briefings, as requested, concerning health and safety aspects of HTRW activities and USACE policies for hazard control at these sites.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or ability to obtain CIH certification.
Travel may be required up to 25%.

Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist:Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
OR
Related Degree: A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene;
OR
Certification from the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (formerly American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH)).
In addition to meeting one of the basic education requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the experience requirements listed below.
GS-11 Specialized Experience is defined as: One year of Specialized experience is defined as: 1) Reviewing industrial hygiene/occupational and environmental health/safety technical aspects of Hazardous, Toxic and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) site investigative; 2) Preparing technical reports identifying health hazards; and 3) Providing recommendations to controls and corrective actions of industrial hygiene problems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
OR
Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or a related science.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
GS-12 Specialized Experience is defined as: One year of Specialized experience is defined as: 1) Utilizing industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices to perform, organize and/or direct on-site surveys and investigations; 2) Preparing survey findings reports and implementing an industrial hygiene program; and 3) Developing training programs on industrial hygiene, safety, and occupational health. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Education
