Help
  • Performs initial editing and processing of files (for example: PDF, Word, Text) from Office of the Federal Register (OFR) for the Register and Congressional products.
  • Checks the galley proofs returned by Proofreaders or revised by the readers, making additional marks when errors are detected or when coding changes are needed to effect the desired results.
  • Distributes and reviews the work of proofreaders, checking the galleys returned by proofreaders or revised by the readers, and making additional marks when errors are detected or when coding changes are needed.
  • Answers queries on galley proofs and verifies marks to be carried on proofs, to the department.
  • Advises and assists Trainees and other personnel on Detail assigned to the section and interprets rules and regulations for employees concerning their work; keeping Supervisor apprised of exceptional workers and/or the poor work performed.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Head Deskperson, KI-4403-00, applicants must meet the following Screen Out-Element: #73 - Ability To Lead Or Supervise.
Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the online questionnaire. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT below is not sufficient, you will not receive further consideration.

In addition to the SCREENOUT, applicants must also have the ability to perform the following:
Proofreads text to make changes and answer queries regarding press jobs.
Answers readers' questions regarding office style and peculiarities in work of an extraordinary nature.
Interprets formats, coding, and preparation when of a technical nature.
Answers queries on galley proofs and train others, as necessary (i.e. where to look for information needed to properly process proofs).

Applicants must have completed either:

a) A formal, recognized apprenticeship or GPO journeyperson training program, or possess substantially equivalent practical experience in the trade of the vacant position, and
b) Served a minimum of one (1) year in a career or career-conditional apppointment in the GPO agency.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement (12/08/2025) to be considered.

To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy; this position requires a Low Risk, Suitability background investigation. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully complete a background investigation for a Low Risk, Suitability. This review could include financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs; this process may take 6 weeks or longer. The Agency may rescind the tentative offer, if the candidate is unable to pass the background investigation.

The selectee will work shift 2 in the Proof and Copy Markup section.

A 10% night differential will be added to your pay (if selected for night shifts).
