This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-08. At the GS-06 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-08. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:

• Uses dental laboratory materials such as impression materials, stones, waxes, acrylics as well as the use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, vacuum former, model trimmers, handpieces, and articulators.
• Receives and pours impressions with proper dental stone for study casts and master casts for complete and partial removable dentures including boxing and beading, trimming and mounting casts as needed. Receives and pours impressions with proper dental stone for crowns, fixed partial dentures, and implants.
• Pours casts and performs minor removable prosthesis repairs with assistance.
• Fabrications of prosthesis include stonework, articulation, setting of teeth, recontouring, actual fabrication, adjusting occlusion, and finishing for inserting into the patient's mouth.
• Fabricates both hard and soft dental splints as per laboratory prescription.
• Adjusts occlusion with hard splints and finishes and polishes for delivery.
• Repairs partial and full dentures, duplicate casts, complete relines and fabricate fluoride trays, night guards, and implant stints.
• Scans impressions and casts with the Digital Dental Lab Scanner in preparation to send the scanned files to the Dental Laboratory for fabrication of the dental prosthesis.
• Mills temporary crowns and diagnostic wax-ups.
• Packages, logs out, and ships cases going to outside laboratories and receives cases, unpacks, logs in and returns cases to the appropriate case pans.
• Maintains records indicating dates of receipt of shipment of cases and the number and status of cases in process.
• Maintains proper stock levels of all laboratory materials and inventory.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm.

Qualifications

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience which has equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; and construction of dental prosthetic appliances.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Successful completion of at least a 1/2 year (6 months) of graduate level education with course work that is directly related to the work of this position OR successful completion of a full 4-year apprenticeship program consisting of at least 2000 hours a year meets the requirements for GS-6. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Requirements: The work is mostly sedentary but also requires standing, bending, reaching, lifting heavy materials, and general dental laboratory functions. This work involves periods of sitting and standing. It involves the use of various dental lab machines. Extensive and detailed use of the hands is required.
