Duties

Help

1. Starts, operates, adjusts, and stops single or multiple fuel power boilers fueled by natural gas, oil, or a combination of these fuels and auxiliary pollution control and other equipment in a steam or high temperature hot water boiler plant.

2. Performs various operational repairs and preventive maintenance on boiler, auxiliary, and pollution control equipment.

3. Collects and tests water samples to determine most efficient use of industrial water treatment.

4. Starts, operates, adjusts, and stops single or multiple fuel power chillers fueled by electricity or natural gas or a combination of these fuels other equipment in a central chilled water plant.

5. Utilizes safety practices, rules, regulations, and procedures to maintain a safe and clean work environment.

  • First Firemen license is required IAW Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) requirement as stated in AFI 32-1068 Hcating Systems and Unfired Pressure Vessels, paragraph 2, section 2.4.12 and Commonwealth of Massachusetts General Law Chapter 146.
  • May be required to train/guide other employees.
  • Shift work is required. Additionally the employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • May be required to serve "on call" and may be required to be available after duty hours when problems arise. The incumbent is subject to call seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
  • Employee will be required to support Base Readiness and Emergency Operations Exercises and Real World Threats and Events.
  • Employee may be required to support Special Events (i.e. Annual Air Show, Base Exercises) not necessarily performing in their primary skill code.
  • The work may require the employee to carry an electronic beeper or cell phone.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5400 Industrial Equipment Operator Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, Operation of Boiler Plant Machinery, Technical Practices, Use of Measuring Instruments, Ability to Interpret instruction/ specifications, Dexterity and Safety.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
