Summary

The Radiology department is seeking a highly qualified Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI) to join their team. The incumbent independently performs complex research evaluations on a variety of MRI equipment utilizing new imaging techniques. Incumbent will operate and optimize MRI settings for advancing both cutting-edge patient care and research. The incumbent will monitor and prioritize patient workflow by evaluating workload and adjust staff workload accordingly.

Duties

Help
  • Distributing and balancing the workload among employees in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, assuring timely accomplishment of the assigned workload, and assuring that each employee has enough work to keep busy.
  • Instructing employees in specific tasks and job techniques and making available written instructions, reference materials and supplies.
  • Providing information to the supervisor, as requested, concerning promotions, reassignments, recognition of outstanding performance, and personnel needs.
  • Providing advice and assistance in the design and planning of all MRI-related research projects.
  • Operating scanner software and computer operating systems.
  • Screening and coordinating patients for examinations, including emergency procedures and rearranges patient exams to accommodate clinical priorities.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI) GS-0647-11:

You must have:

(1) successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the credentialing standards described in 42 CFR Part 75 that is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education,
AND

(2) be certified as a radiographer as evidenced by an active state or national license which is in good standing.

The following meets the above standards:

1. Persons employed by the Federal Government as a radiologic personnel prior to January 13,1986 who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.

2. Persons first employed by the Federal Government as a radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State of foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation,
OR

(b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided that such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by OPM or the employing agency.

Additional Qualifications requirements:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-10 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following tasks: leading and mentoring MRI staff members; monitoring the operation and performance of radiographic equipment and other related computer software/hardware; training staff on the proper uses and methods associated with imaging; maintaining and evaluating image quality standards of all MRI procedures; evaluating the effectiveness of the current diagnostic radiology practices and making recommendations for improvement.

  • This position is designated as an "emergency essential" position and the selected candidate will be considered an "emergency essential" employee and will be required to be available, ready, willing, and able to report for duty under all circumstances (e.g., inclement weather, government closings and holidays, lapses in appropriations, non-emergency and emergency situations) for operation 24 hours a day and 365 days per year coverage.
  • The work requires extreme periods of standing and walking and assisting patients on and off of the imaging tables. Reaching is required to properly direct equipment to the area being examined. Positioning patients who are unconscious or disabled requires considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Heavy lifting of totally incapacitated patients is done only with the help of other employees.
  • The work area is well lighted, heated, and ventilated. Special safety precautions are required to reduce exposure to X-rays. These include using minimum current settings in the X-ray machine and never operating the machine except from behind a protective screen or when wearing protective clothing such as a lead apron.
  • Based on your appointment, a one or two-year trial/probationary period may be required. A decision regarding your continued employment with NIH will be made as you near the end of this period.
