Duties

Help
  • Install, maintain, repair, recognize the cause of faulty equipment; overhaul, modify and relocate equipment on various industrial and special purpose air-conditioning and cooling unit systems.
  • Repairs and maintains air conditioning field units and/or truck mounted units. Equipment consists of compressors, thermostatic motor controls, full and semi-automatic defrosting controls, and motors.
  • Diagnosis and troubleshoots system to locate malfunctions.
  • Makes layout for new installation or relocation of existing equipment and completes entire systems by installing sheet metal ducts, vibration joints, louvers, grills, reworking piping, etc.
  • Electrical work includes installing fuse and overload protection, conduits and wiring, and associated central wiring to include thermostats, humidity controls, etc., in accordance with the National Electrical Code.

  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires incumbent to work an on-call work schedule to respond to after-hours emergencies. This may include, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Selective Placement Factor: Incumbent is required to maintain a CFC certification type universal as required by section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990 EPA mandatory technician certification. (Note: You must submit a copy of your CFC Certification with your application package. Failure to do so will result in a rating of ineligible.)

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic tasks. I can repair and recognize the cause of faulty equipment on various industrial and/or special purpose air-conditioning and cooling unit systems. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Mechanic frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Repairs and installations are made from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Work is frequently performed in hard-to-reach places; therefore, stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are often for long periods of time.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside, on top of buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Work areas are frequently dirty and greasy; variable temperatures occur when working in cold storage rooms or climatic test chambers. Subject to cuts, bruises, burns, and electrical shock and the possibility of respiratory disorders due to inhalation of refrigerant gases. Protective clothing and facemasks may be occasionally worn when there is a possibility of risk.
