Duties

Help
  • As a Firefighter, responds to fire alarms for all classes of fires, including those involving radioactive and/or hazardous materials, medical emergencies, rescue operations; wild land fires, hazardous material incidents, and aircraft emergencies.
  • Incumbent will be assigned as equipment driver/operator to operate a 250-gpm to a 2,000-gpmpumper or other emergency vehicle.
  • Determines pressure required and adjusts valves, as necessary, to regulate flow of extinguishing agents.
  • Uses breathing and other protective equipment. Inspects and tests breathing equipment before and after each use and refills air cylinders.
  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools and works in all phases of firefighting/rescue operations. Tests and maintains power tools and equipment.
  • Incumbent shall perform daily operational checks for both truck and equipment to ensure operational readiness at all times.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Incumbent is subject to periodic (e.g. annual) medical examinations following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • This is a testing Designated Position. The employee is subject to random drug testing.
  • Mission Essential - in the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Incumbent must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Incumbent must wear a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Incumbent will be required to work 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24-hour shift and may include working nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • May be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends, i.e., mandatory overtime; subject to recall to duty.
  • Within 24 mos of occupying the position, the incumbent must obtain and then continue to maintain the following DoD Firefighter Certification levels: Driver Operator - Pumper Driver Operator - Aerial Driver Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete an annual emergency vehicle operator's course.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • Incumbent must maintain a functioning telephone at their residence to aid in contact during recall/emergency situations.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience GS-05: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade.

OR

Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience GS-06: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; and responding to basic hazardous incidents. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.


Specialized Experience GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; and controlling hazardous materials incidents. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.


In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Firefighter I, Firefighter II, HazMat Technician, and Airport Firefighter certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M and a State or National Registry EMT-Basic Certification Card indicating a future expiration date.
