This position is located in Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VAMC Patient Care Services (PCS) under the direct supervision of a Nurse Manager. The incumbent provides continuous cardiac surveillance, interpretation and reporting of monitor and telemetry tracing of patients within PCS. They are expected to recognize changes in patient's condition and be astute in assessing the need for intervention which may be of an emergent nature requiring immediate attention. The incumbent will provide assistance to the Nursing Staff to assure coordinated and efficient delivery of patient care services. In addition, the incumbent performs basic equipment maintenance and cleaning.

Duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Admit the patient to the Centralized Telemetry Monitoring system and prepare a telemetry box and record patient information.
  • Places patient information on the telemetry unit monitoring system, completes documentation.
  • of telemetry admission information, provides patient instructions for receiving telemetry care.
  • Detects abnormal or changing rate, rhythm, or pattern of conduction directly from oscilloscopic rhythm display, from computer triggered alarms, or from EKG records on computer memory.
  • Monitor for non-invasive blood pressure and continuous pulse oximetry (SP02) alarm events when in use.
  • Promptly validates/invalidates alarm conditions.
  • Establishes and maintains morphologically suitable and noise free EKG signal. Detects need for lead changes by observing accuracy of computer diagnosis and noting clarity of EKG signal at console oscilloscope.
  • Preserves an analyzed six second strip every 8-12 hours (or per protocol) and as needed for rhythm changes.
  • Labels rhythm strip with the patient's name, lead, PR QRS and QT intervals and rhythm interpretation.
  • Monitor patients in lead II or MCL unless specified per protocol or patient specific needs.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of minor/major/life threatening cardiac rhythm disturbance.
  • Sets alarm limits per policy.
  • Admit/discharge patient in Telemetry monitoring computer system.
  • Gives verbal reports to nursing staff regarding patient EKG rhythm.
  • Completes hand-off communication to oncoming telemetry monitoring staff member.
  • Runs a continuous strip on telemetry patients during emergency situation.
  • Keeps an accurate log of all cardiac arrhythmia per standard operating procedure.
  • Ensures high quality information and visual display of patient's tracing.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Assisting RN with patient care as directed, Providing direct patient observation, Assisting with transfer and ambulation of patients, Answering call lights and if unable to independently assist, communicates patients' needs to assigned RN or Charge Nurse, Measuring and recording blood pressure, respirations, oral and axillary temperature, weight, and pulse.

There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.
