Summary

This position is located in the Facilities/Maintenance Branch, Support Division, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department, Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois. The purpose of this position is to maintain and repair facilities and equipment, as well as facility renovations and support of special events and programs under the jurisdiction of the MWR Department.

Duties

Help

85% - Under the directions of the Maintenance Leader and Maintenance Manager, incumbent performs work requiring semi-skilled knowledge in the use of basic hand tools, such as saws, screwdrivers, hammers and basic power tools for several trades. Trades consist of carpentry, electrical, plumbing, flooring, painting and snow removal. Assists in work and projects for higher grade Maintenance workers.

Performs labor duties, including but not limited to: moving items as directed, repair and maintain the athletic fields, performs periodic inventory of maintenance stock and equipment, removes trash, cleans and maintains the picnic grounds and exterior facility grounds to include the following duties when required: mowing lawns, trimming, raking leaves, pulling weeds, snow removal and keeping buildings and grounds in a clean and orderly condition. Must be able to drive the department vehicles and tractor to assist in assigned duties. Troubleshoot and repair small equipment, change light bulbs, unclog drains, minor repairs to walls, ceilings, tables, chairs and floors, etc. Installation of special event equipment, tents, inflatables and electrical, etc. for base events as they come up. Snow removal for MWR designated facilities is required. Able to safely operate gas powered snow blowers, snow shovels and salt spreaders. May perform custodial duties as assigned when needed, requiring operation of basic cleaning equipment, tools, materials and products.

10% - Able to read and interpret basic work orders or plans. Able to understand and follow verbal direction. Determines the type of materials and tools needed in accomplishing work. Able to maintain and repair tools and equipment when needed or required. Able to read and use proper applications according to a MSDS. Familiarizes, interprets and incorporates safety requirements, environmental, Hazmat and OSHA rules and regulations.

5% - Performs other duties as assigned.

A qualified candidate possess the following:

Knowledge of semi-skilled elements of many trades. Must have and maintain a valid driver's license. Ability to care for, check fluids and determine the proper operation of a vehicle. Possesses sound basic knowledge of the elements of may trade fields as to material, repair parts, tools and methods of performing work. Musty be able to work independently as well as with others.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Salary is dependent on experience and/or education.
