Summary

This position is located in the Facility Management Department at Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, IL. The Electronic Industrial Controls Mechanic is responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to the operation, maintenance and repair of the electronic HVAC systems utilized at the facility.

Help

Major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Performing various types of complex control systems including electrical/electronic, pneumatic, based controls.
  • Troubleshooting computer-based HVAC systems, station fire system, and variable speed AC and DC controllers; and resolving problems related to controls and alarm systems of all equipment.
  • Establishing and maintaining documentation flies for all system such as drawings, programs, sequences of operation, preventive maintenance records, and machinery history records.
  • Performing field check and mark up control and associated drawings of existing systems for Engineering Draftsman to update.
  • Evaluating conditions of all HVAC system components and performing inspections of station fire alarm.
  • Providing training to maintenance tradesman regarding all types of complex systems operations and maintenance and specialized troubleshooting techniques.
  • Providing technical assistance and project support for proposed and on-going renovation and construction of systems with controls.
  • Interfacing with outside manufacturers in the repair of failed systems and installation and checkout of new systems.
  • Interpreting engineering drawings as to layouts, location, and operation of all types of control or controlled systems at the facility.
  • Making up engineering drawings, along with sequence of operation analysis, for all types of complex control or controlled systems as required.
  • Presenting written and/or oral reports on various aspects of control equipment status and/or proposed systems or system changes.

Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 7:00am-3:30pm

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The incumbent of this position must be capable of lifting, carrying and moving items weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted and heavier loads with assistance. Will be required to work from ladders, scaffolding and/or platforms to accomplish assignments when systems are located in hard-to-reach places. May be required to work in close quarters or in cramped positions. Work requires hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate tools when assembling units and replacing defective components, coordination for reading and setting gauges, adjusting controls, etc., and color discrimination to recognize color codes. Work frequently requires stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling for long period of time.

Works indoors and outdoors, on elevated structures, and in cramped areas. Subject to discomfort from face masks and/or other protective devices when exposure to infectious disease is possible. Other hazards include the possibility of electrical shock/burn; injuries to skin, eyes and lungs from refrigerants, gases, chemicals and solvents; and danger of cuts, scratches, and bruises. Exposure to dust, foul odors, dampness, and the hazards of power machinery are common during performance of daily assignments.

Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements.
