This position functions primarily within the inpatient care areas and Pharmacy Service within the Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA Medical Center (JMCAVAMC). The Compound Sterile Product (CPS) Oncology Pharmacy Technician is a highly specialized technician, who will perform a variety of complex functions in the preparation of chemotherapeutic agents. Most duties will be performed in the oncology IV sterile compounding suite of pharmacy. The technician must be competent in sterile product preparation, have a thorough understanding of principles of laminar flow hoods, and a knowledge base United States Pharmacopeia (USP) <797> and USP <800> compounding standards of antineoplastic/cytotoxic agents, including the precautions needed in the handling of these products. The incumbent is expected to maintain a high degree of accurate productivity and performance while being extremely sensitive to the specific contribution to total patient care.

The individual will work under the supervision of the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Supervisor and Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor. The individual will receive operational and technical guidance from the CSP program manager and the pharmacist on duty in the IV sterile compounding suite. The incumbent will consistently demonstrate independent technical judgement and comprehensive and thorough working knowledge of sterile preparation for both hazardous and non-hazardous medications.

Functions:
Pharmacy Technicians assigned to this position must demonstrate the following KSAs:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology, and polices in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.)
  • Skill in training and orienting new existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures.
  • Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy.
Duties:
  1. Performs essential role in preparation, compounding, dispensing, and distribution of sterile and nonsterile hazardous medication within designated sterile compounding areas.
  2. Receives, reviews, and prepares physician order for cytotoxic agents and premedication.
  3. Performs accurate product identification labeling dosage calculation, and compounding of agents by utilizing package literature, written procedural guidelines and application of specialized knowledge.
  4. Successfully complete assignments and maintain annual competencies to compound hazardous and non-hazardous IV sterile preparations according to USP<795><797> and <800> standards.
  5. Reviews anticipated inventory needs and notifies procurement technician in a timely manner of products required.
  6. Assists in maintaining all required records related to sterile compounding.
  7. Maintains Chemo/IV rood medication inventory, compounding supplies and cleaning product to ensure availability and minimize waste.
  8. Conducts daily, weekly, and monthly IV room cleaning to include check for soon to expire medications.
  9. Prepares sterile ophthalmic preparations and other complex sterile pharmaceuticals such as total parenteral alimentations and cardioplegia solutions.
  10. Maintains comprehensive knowledge and understanding of USP 795/797/800 chapters and hazardous drug handling to assist in management, compliance, staff education activities, training, and room certifications.
  11. Ensures full compliance with all regulatory requirements (VHA, Joint Commission, USP <795><797><800>, EPA, OSHA, NIOSH, and FDA).
  12. Provides training to new or existing staff so that these competencies are maintained.
  13. Performs all the duties of lower grade technicians, if required.

Work Schedule: 3:30 pm to 12 am Monday-Friday rotating weekends and holidays

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English
  • Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
Grade Determination (GS-8):Experience. One year experience at the next lower level (GS-7), and must fully meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) at the next lower level, which are:
  • Knowledge of Federal and state laws related to pharmacy practice.
  • Knowledge of preparation, storage and distribution of medication products including those requiring special handling and documentation.
  • Ability to use pharmacy information systems or operate pharmacy dispensing equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
  • Ability to communicate with patients and staff and direct questions to appropriate personnel.

Physical Requirements: The position requires frequent walking and standing; repeated bending; moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); the ability to read handwritten or typed characters with or without glasses; ability to hear conversation voice with or without aid; and emotional and mental stability.
