Duties

Help
  • As Bureau Chief, the incumbent serves as senior editor, advisor, and reviewer for all writing/editing projects assigned or originating within the assigned region of Stars and Stripes.
  • Personally plans, reviews and edits a wide range of breaking news, features and investigative reports.
  • Ensures timely and accurate information on all matters of interest to the DoD community, including service members, family members, and civilians on a local, regional, and worldwide basis.
  • Supervises writers and subordinate editors. Provides overall management and direction of editorial activities through junior level editors to ensure attainment of established objectives.
  • Serves as the staff advisor on written and editorial policy matters. Provides interpretations of writing policy and advises on matters such as content, presentation, interpretation, and explanation to a variety of audiences.

  • Must possess a valid US Driver's license with the ability to obtain and maintain a valid US Army Europe (USAREUR) Certificate of license. License must be obtained within 30 days of arrival on site.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain an Official No-fee Passport.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate must possess the following:

Three (3) years of specialized experience directly related to the following duties: Develops, designs, researches, writes, reviews, and edits publications and reports to the readership on a wide range of topics: Ensures timely and accurate information on all matters of interest to readers: Supervises writers and provides overall management and direction of editorial activities through junior level editors to ensure attainment of established objectives: Serves as the staff advisor on written and editorial policy matters: Copy edits articles applying rules contained in the Associated Press (AP): Assures that releases have been obtained for copyright material and ensures compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies. Demonstrated work experience must include 1 year equivalent in complexity and difficulty to the next lower pay band level.

In addition to the above qualifications, candidates who possess the following qualifications will be considered "Highly Preferred" or "Best Qualified":
1. Possess a 4-yr course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree in journalism and related work experience as described above.
2. Possess at least five (5) years' experience as a journalist at a commercial news organization.

  • This job is part of a pay-banded system. Sunday premium pay for regularly scheduled employees and night differential pay may be authorized by the Garrison Commander.
  • Foreign overseas allowances, post allowance, and differentials will be be paid, contingent upon eligibility. These allowances may include Living Quarters Allowance (LQA), Temporary Quarters Subsistence Allowance (TQSA) and requires a Transportation Agreement in accordance (IAW) the provisions of the Department of States Standardized Regulations (DSSR).
