  • You will work under the general supervision of the engineer on watch.
  • You will oil and grease all machinery.
  • You will monitor all machinery on regular rounds.
  • You will check bilges and operate bilge pumps.
  • You will operate manifold switch oil level from one tank to another.
  • You will assist in making repairs to diesel engines.
  • You will conduct routine maintenance of diesel propulsion system, pumping and auxiliary systems ventilation controls auxiliary engines, automatic control consoles, sanitary and lubrication systems.

  • This is a mandatory drug Testing Designated Position (TDP), in accordance with EP 600-1-300, USACE Drug Testing Procedures for the Army’s Drug-Free Federal Workplace (DFW) Program, dated 28 Feb 01.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 95% of the time.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

Qualifications

About the Position: This position is aboard a hopper dredge. The Portland District's hopper dredges Yaquina and Essayons, work to ensure a safe "highway" for ships and other vessels. The hopper dredge is a specialized sea-going vessel designed to dredge and transport dredged material from ocean bars, fast flowing rivers and isolated harbors to open-water disposal areas.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Marine Equipment Repairer/Operator (Dual Rate) without more than normal supervision. You must possess a current United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC) with a Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) with Oiler's Rating or higher -AND- a current Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Working Conditions: Exposed to extremes of weather conditions, heat, and noise. There is danger of slippery decks and drowning. Must wear appropriate safety gear and protective clothing as required, and comply with sound safety practices. May be exposed to hot pipes, escaping steam and the effects of acids, solvents, and paint.
  • Physical Effort: Work requires moderate physical effort. Lifts and carries equipment and supplies normally up to 45 pounds. and occasionally over 45 pounds. Work requires prolonged standing, walking and climbing, all of which can cause exertion of the lower back. The employee must maintain good lower back physical condition. Incumbent must have color and depth perception and be ale to see by low visibility conditions in order to perform duties.
