This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-3. At the GS-2 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-3. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.

The primary purpose of this position is to deliver a broad array of health care services throughout the medical center and it's various locations that provide patient care, i.e., living centers, etc. duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Provides holistic in-patient care in a manner conducive to the comfort and safety of those in the facility hospital units, living centers, and/or household.
  • Assists as needed with activities of daily living and range of personal care such as bathing, toileting, hair/nail care, dressing in personal clothing while maintaining privacy and dignity of patient.
  • Assists as needed with eating, drinking, positioning/turning, ambulating, transferring, and escorting inpatients/residents.
  • Maintains general cleanliness of the inpatient/resident environment, including emptying and cleaning urinals, bed pans, GU bags and suction bottles, and disposing dirty linen and disposable briefs; assists with laundering/distributing personal clothing; and distributes canteen books and incidentals.
  • Performs a range of clinical support services. Takes, monitors, and documents resident weight/height; collects urine, stool, sputum, and other specimens for laboratory analysis; measures/documents fluid intake/output, monitors oxygen flow, observe/report changes in resident physical condition, pain levels, and/or behavioral changes, etc.
  • Performs discharge bed cleaning duties due to patient inter ward transfers, deaths, and discharges; carries out regular scheduled deep cleaning of beds.
  • Engages in dialogue and uses multiple media avenues to promote meaningful use of time and participation in leisure activities.
  • Assists with inventory management and ordering of supplies, placing stock as provided in appropriate storage areas, rotating stock on shelves, replenishing, and removing/replacing outdates items.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Monday-Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm with every other or third weekend. May include holidays if needed.
Monday-Friday, 10:00am - 6:30pm with every other or third weekend. May include holidays if needed.

Qualifications

For this Health Aid GS-2 position, applicant(s) must meet at least one of the following minimum qualification requirements:

A. A least Three months of general experience in (l) Any type of work that demonstrates your ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. (Refer to the duties section of this announcement for detailed related general experience information) OR
B. Successfully completed high school or the equivalent. NOTE: Education cannot be credited without documentation. Provide documentation/proof that you have met the applicable educational provision, i.e., Transcript, or statement from the institution's registrar or appropriate official, or the equivalent, i.e., copy of diploma, GED certification, etc.

For this Health Aid GS-3 position, applicant(s) meet at least one of the following minimum qualification requirements.

A. At least Six months of general experience in (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. (Refer to the duties section of this announcement for detailed general experience information) OR
B. Successfully completed one full year of education above high school that included study in medical, health, or related fields. (NOTE: Education cannot be credited without documentation. Transcript Required (unofficial or official) OR
C. Equivalent combination of successfully completed general experience and post high-school education in excess of 6 months. (Transcript required)

AND
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work requires long periods of standing, with minor bending, lifting, and pushing. The work may include carrying different sizes and weights of items; and requires agility and dexterity to handle papers, books, charts, boxes of copier paper, and medical supplies. Care duties are performed in an inpatient-resident-centered environment requiring normal safety precautions. Due to the essential functions of the job, the employee may be exposed to infectious waste, disease, odors, and other situations associated with health care, including but not limited to, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, MRSA, and VRE. Universal precautions are always followed. While completing kitchen duties, may be exposed to temperatures of refrigerators/freezers and ovens, as well as wet floors.
