Summary

About the Position: Serves as a Gastroenterology Technician and provides direct assistance to the staff and gastroenterology physician during invasive gastrointestinal types of procedures. Prepares the patient, equipment and the procedure area to perform invasive procedures; and resets the equipment and procedure area for the next procedure.

Duties

Help
  • Assist the Gastroenterologist and/or the GI Surgeon in various clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic and/or emergency procedures
  • Assist with endoscopic biopsies and polypectomies.
  • Provide patients an initial preparation checklist and provides an explanation of the procedures to minimize fears and to ensure their cooperation.
  • Select, sets up, adjust and operates equipment for designated procedures.
  • Move the mobile procedure cart, equipment cart and portable monitor to the ED, ICU or OR;.
  • Prepare the equipment for operation; and, assists the gastroenterology physician in the procedure with the equipment.
  • Position and drapes the patient in accordance with clinic standard operating procedures.
  • Operate the automatic endoscope reprocessing system to disinfect equipment.
  • Disinfect equipment to prevent patient infection and cross-contamination by disassembling the scope, brushes parts and dips into a solution prior to putting into the washer.
  • Prepare reports on examinations, equipment and utilization, workload, supply status, consumption and related matters.
  • Maintain inventory according to standards.
  • Perform all setup of equipment, checks instruments/equipment for completeness and proper functioning prior to beginning procedure; and troubleshoots equipment during procedures as necessary.

  • Position is subject to rotating shifts and/or irregular tour of duty to include weekends, nights, on call, and/or holidays.
  • Position is designated mission/weather essential during inclement weather or other appropriate emergency conditions.
  • Required to complete a preemployment medical examination and may require an annual physical or medical surveillance examination.
  • Position is required to wear and use personal protective equipment as needed.
  • Required to complete a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • Must be able to light up to 25 lbs.
  • This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the employee to obtain Hepatitis B immunizations and Tuberculosis testing unless exempt by physician. Employee will be required to wear and use personal protective equipment as required and provided by the employer.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in gastroenterological procedures; and preparing patient for procedure or setting up equipment and/or instruments for designated procedure. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Gastroenterology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
