Duties

Help
  • You will work aboard ships and submarines and within shop may require periods of standing.
  • You will install piping systems for ships or submarines.
  • You will align pipes, valves, fittings, and joints to verify ends match accurately.
  • You will interpret diagrams, sketches, and blueprints for location to bore holes in bulkheads, decks, walls, floors, ceilings, or other obstructions to permit passage of pipe.
  • You will operate welding, cutting, and burning equipment to cut, bend, thread, and assemble pipe fittings.

  • Ability to remove and install piping systems and equipment on submarines.
  • Ability to maintain and repair piping systems and equipment on submarines.
  • Ability to replace piping components such as valves, strainers, and related fittings.
  • Ability to prepare piping systems for welding operations.
  • Ability to disassemble, maintain, clean, and assemble hose systems for hydraulics, oil, water, and similar systems.
  • Ability to prepare equipment and components for installation and inspect completed items for adherence to specifications.
  • Ability to use a variety of pipefitting tools, including grinders, brazing torches, measuring tools, hydraulic pipe benders, and silver solder, to complete assigned work.
  • Ability to perform testing on repaired and installed piping systems, heat exchangers, and condensers to ensure proper functional capability.
  • Ability to operate chemical flushing rigs to clean piping systems and components.
  • Ability to determine adequacy of existing pipe hangers and replace them when necessary.
  • Ability to remove, maintain, and test tank level indicators in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ability to read, research, and interpret basic or complex blueprints, instructions, and specifications to perform assigned pipefitting tasks.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

Work aboard ships and submarines and within shops may require periods of standing, vertical climbing, stooping, and moving in and out of areas of close confinement.

Light to moderate physical exertion will be required in lifting and carrying items weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally lifting objects up to 90 pounds with assistance.

Will be required to take physical examinations in accordance with mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Standards and Requirements.

Work aboard ships and submarines and within shops may lead to exposure to fumes, electrical shock, flying objects, excessive noise, and other adverse environmental conditions.

May be required to work at various heights from ladders, scaffolding, buckets, etc. as well as in confined spaces such as trunks or tanks.
