  • Orchestrates HQ AFGSC historical efforts, determining breadth of historical treatment, approaches, and techniques to be employed.
  • Exercises supervisory personnel management responsibilities.
  • Establishes policies and provides direction for the organization and maintenance of AFGSC historical records.
  • Implements the Air Force Art, Heritage, and Heraldry Programs in AFGSC.

  • Selection for this position is contingent upon proof of U. S. Citizenship.
  • Mobility is a condition of employment; the employee must sign an Air Force-wide mobility agreement.
  • Must attend and successfully complete the Historian Training Course within 9 months of being hired.
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft/vehicle to conferences, meetings, or functions away from office/location. Travel may include overnight stays.
  • Employee may be required to work extended or other than normal hours to include evenings and weekends and may be subject to recall.
  • A graduate degree in a related field of study is highly desired.

Qualifications

Conditions of Employment Continued:

  • This position is a "Key" position. It cannot be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization without impairing the capability of the organization to- function effectively. Unless an alternate can be designated to perform the duties of this position during wartime, the incumbent of this "Key" position must be screened from military recall status.
  • This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employe and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security.
  • The duties of this position meet all requirements as a category 4 designation and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization without serio capability of the parent Federal Agency or office to function effectively. This position must be removed from the Ready Reserve and cannot become a member of the (IAW: DoDD 1200.7, "Screening the Ready Reserve).
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions, History 0170 series.

BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Degree: history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 (or higher) grade level or equivalent pay systems (may have been obtained in the federal service, military, or public sector). My experience includes Knowledge of professional historical principles, concepts, methodology, and techniques including historical and organizational research. Broad knowledge of federal government and command history programs and current operations, policies, programs, and activities. Knowledge of Air Force heraldry, art, and heritage programs, policies, and procedures.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-13 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-14 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  1. Knowledge of professional historical principles, concepts, methodology, and techniques including historical and organizational research.
  2. Broad knowledge of federal government and command history programs and current operations, policies, programs, and activities.
  3. Knowledge of Air Force heraldry, art, and heritage programs, policies, and procedures.
  4. Ability to lead teams and originate new ideas, projects, and methodologies.
  5. Knowledge of a broad range of historical fields and periods.
  6. Ability to use imagination and ingenuity in the location of obscure source materials.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
