Duties

Help
  • You will assist marine machinery mechanics in the marine machinery repair processes on marine machinery and equipment e.g., YCs, YONs, YWOs, SWOBs and various other small craft and support equipment including preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • You will operate a forklift to access and service the equipment in the proper position and location.
  • You will perform preventive and corrective maintenance of various types of harbor support equipment to include fender camels, separation brows and platforms.
  • You will handle controls for starting, stopping, backings, and driving fork lift trucks through narrow aisles in building, up and down ramps, and in and out of railroad cars, trucks, planes, etc.

  • Employee will be required to become Facility Response team (FRT) qualified. Complete all standard oil spill response training as required by 29 CFR 1910.120.
  • Incumbent will be required to obtain a forklift license up to 10 tons within the first six months of employment. Training and license certification will be provided by the government.
  • Will be required to complete Shore Installation Management Basic Boat Coxswain (SIMBBC) and Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) courses and applicable PQS.
  • Must complete Personal Qualification Standards requirements (PQS) as assigned by the Region Program Manager to include Maintenance and Material Management (3M) and Lock-out/Tagout qualifications.
  • Shift work or work during other than normal working hours may be required and may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • The incumbent will be required to take medical examinations to assess his/her medical qualifications and/or need for vaccination for duty involving work with these agents and/or possible contraction of disease.

Physical Effort
The work involves standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and crawling.
Frequently climb ladders or staging on high assemblies, in shops, and aboard tugs, boats, and
other service craft. Work may be done in awkward and cramped positions such as when welding
in hard to reach places; use of hands, legs, and arms is required for climbing. Frequent lifting is
required to handle objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally, objects weighing in excess
of 50 pounds, in setting up work and equipment and in completing assignments.
Working Conditions
The work is done indoors and outdoors, sometimes in bad weather, in areas that may vary from
"clean rooms" to areas that are noisy, dirty, and smoky. Incumbent may be continuously exposed
to such hazardous and unpleasant worksite conditions as vibration, excessive noise, fumes, flying
particles, welding flashes, dust, dirt, and grime; thus, employees are subject to damage to eyes
and respiratory system, broken bones, bruises, cuts, shocks, and burns. Various protective
devices such as hard hats, face shields, respirators, ear protection devices, gloves, safety shoes,
and glasses are used to minimize these conditions. They are also exposed to serious injury from
slipping and falling while working aloft on mast, and from ladders and staging. They occasionally work in unpleasant and cramped area of ships having minimum lighting and ventilation.

May be required to work with hazardous materials such as fuel additives, paints, thinners,
batteries and corrosives and comply with all hazardous materials.

Incumbent may be assigned to work areas where certain potentially harmful physical and
chemical agents are present. These agents may include, but are not limited to: fumes, dust, noise,
heat, chemicals, etc. Incumbent may also be assigned to work areas where contact with sewage
waste is possible. To ensure employee safety and health, the CNRH and Pearl Harbor Naval
Shipyard maintain personnel protection programs consistent with applicable laws and regulations.
These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personnel
protective equipment, and medical surveillance.
