This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: Performs maintenance and repair on diesel engines, transmissions, cranes, bulldozers, winches, and electrical systems aboard the dredge Goetz. Assists with watchstanding duties and supports other mechanics to ensure continuous, safe operation of floating plant equipment.

Duties

Help
  • Assists in removing, disassembling, and rebuilding diesel engines (15 to 5500 HP). Installs new parts, rebuilds fuel and water pumps, adjusts valve and fuel timing to restore engines to proper operating condition.
  • Disassembles and repairs marine transmissions and reduction gears. Replaces and adjusts transmission controls. Overhauls mechanical and automatic transmissions on tractors, excavators, and bulldozers.
  • Performs maintenance on bulldozers, cranes, and winches. Replaces tracks, rollers, cables, hydraulic hoses, brake and clutch linings. Adjusts components to restore equipment to proper working order.
  • Maintains and repairs 6, 12, 24, and 32-volt electrical systems. Removes and installs starters, alternators, batteries, and voltage regulators to restore units to normal operation.
  • Relieves watch standers during breaks and absences, maintaining engine room safety and operations. Assists Chief Electrician and Marine Equipment Mechanic as needed for repairs and maintenance.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This is a seasonal position. Seasonal employment means annually recurring periods of work for six months which may vary based on Agency needs.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment and annual physical examinations.
  • The position meets the criteria for random drug testing under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work.
  • May be required to alternate working hours on all shifts to include weekdays and weekends as well as rotating shifts.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Heavy Mobile and Marine Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. I can perform repairs and maintenance on engines, transmissions, cranes, and electrical systems; disassemble and rebuild parts; adjust equipment for proper operation. Work is under supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who reviews work for completion. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
