Duties

Help
  • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity. The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Reviews and appraises requirements of APHIS for special-purpose equipment in determining suitability of equipment to field work for which it is intended.
  • Initiates and plans work programs with assistance of field personnel in improving specialized equipment for control, eradication, survey, and regulatory activities of APHIS.
  • Develops training guides and trains field personnel in the calibration, capacity, and use of equipment for best results and safe operation.
  • Cooperates with Agricultural Research, Science and Technology, and PPQ program directors to plan, design, implement, and evaluate specialized equipment for insect rearing facilities.
  • Represents APHIS in negotiating the manufacture of special-purpose equipment in accordance with detailed design specifications developed by AEO and PPQ programs.
  • Provides technical specifications and conduct technical reviews of solicitations to support contract procurement actions.
  • Prepares reports and documentation for equipment-related activities.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

FOR THE GS-12 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-11 grade level) that demonstrates:

- Organizing and directing all activities related to plant pest equipment services, including planning and organizing work, developing operational procedures, and purchasing materials.
- Serves as a technical advisor or consultant on all aspects of plant pest equipment services to co-workers and subordinates, industry representatives, and other government agencies.
- Participating in the plan, design and implementation of specialized equipment for a plant pest program.
- Performing installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of specialized equipment for scientific research and development projects.

Note: There is no education substitution for this grade level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
