Duties

Help

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that participates in investigating and litigating civil and criminal cases by providing ligation support services to Assistant United States Attorney at the U.S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of Florida. At the full performance level typical work assignments will include:

  • Providing technical and analytical assistance to support the litigation needs of the trial team.
  • Performs a variety of routine and complex litigation support task necessary to process common electronically stored information.
  • Assisting attorneys and legal staff in organizing voluminous discovery and exhibits for trial preparation
  • Maintaining records of returns/production received pursuant to subpoenas, warrants, and other investigative tools.
  • Assisting attorneys and legal staff in organizing voluminous case information for efficient retrieval;
  • Managing complex electronically stored information (ESI)
  • Processing electronically stored information (ESI) using appropriate tools
  • Provides customer support services to litigation team members relating to their use of litigation technology applications.
  • Maintains inventory and tracks litigation support equipment (e.g.,external optical media readers and duplicators; specialized scanners; large format printers; etc.).
  • Creates electronic versions of exhibits for court fi lings, depositions, hearings, or trials.
  • Operates software or equipment to present exhibits during civil or criminal legal proceedings.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications

To be considered qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying:

To be eligible for the GS-9 grade level: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level in federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing routine litigation support assignments preparing and managing electronic discovery, evidence, exhibits, and other electronically stored information (ESI) relevant to investigations and casework; utilizing a variety of software applications in order to create physical and digital trial presentations; assisting attorneys with trial preparation, including making recommendations on how to proceed with trial presentations; working with attorneys, agents, and legal support staff to determine the most effective strategy to meet litigation needs; providing advice, customer support, or project management services in relation to electronic discovery, litigation support projects, and litigation technology software applications; and providing technical assistance to litigation teams. This experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service and could have been gained in the federal, public, or private sector.

OR

Education: a Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in a related field (e.g. Law, Criminal Justice, Information Technology). OR two (2) full year of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree; OR LL.B or J.D if related;

OR a combination of specialized experience and education as described which combined equal 100% of the requirements described. A combination of experience and graduate level education can be used if, when combined, are equivalent to 100% of the qualification requirement. Only graduate level education in excess of the first full year can be used in this calculation. To calculate your percentage of graduate education, first determine the total number of graduate level hours that exceed 18 semester hours (or your school's definition of one year of graduate study), then divide the total number of your excess graduate semester hours by 18 (or your school's definition of one year of graduate study). To calculate your percentage of specialized experience, divide the total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now, add the two percentages together. The sum of the percentages must equal at least 100%.

To be eligible for the GS-11 grade level, you musthave at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience generating complex and voluminous electronic case materials that must be organized, processed, reviewed, produced in discovery, and presented in court by the deadline date; providing technical advice to litigation teams on legal automation requirements and system capabilities; performing routine litigation support tasks relating to case teams' review of common electronically stored information (ESI); analyzing litigation discovery, and evidence to develop or recommend appropriate strategies to meet investigations and litigation needs; participating in trial preparation and presentations, and preparing demonstrative exhibits required for litigation; providing technical assistance to litigation teams; managing and maintaining accurate and current records on a complex and/or voluminous scale. This experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service and could have been gained in the federal, public, or private sector.

OR
Education: You must have three (3) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education, LL.M., Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field (e.g., Information Technology, Criminal Justice, Law); or a combination of both specialized experience and education as explained below. Graduate education must be in excess of 2 years. The education must be obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrates that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position

OR A combination of specialized experience and education described above which combined equal 100% of the requirements described. A combination of experience and graduate level education can be used if, when combined, are equivalent to 100% of the qualification requirement. Only graduate level education in excess of the first two years can be used in this calculation. To calculate your percentage of graduate education, first determine the total number of graduate level hours that exceed 36 semester hours (or your school's definition of two years of graduate study), then divide the total number of your excess graduate semester hours by 36 (or your school's definition of one year of graduate study). Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
