Help

The Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor located is responsible for the supervision of three shops including the carpentry/painting, electrical and maintenance mechanic departments.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervises all the personnel assigned to the carpentry/painting, electrical and maintenance mechanic department units and act as a backup to the other shop supervisor.
  • Possesses knowledge of the technical practices for HVAC, mechanical, boiler plant, pipefitting and plumbing crafts, as well as knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials as well as safety.
  • Plans the daily, weekly, and monthly distribution of work to ensure the proper and efficient use of resources while motivating the employees in the section to perform as an effective team.
  • Analyzes workload and support medical center needs to establish deadlines, set priorities, and adjusts work assignments to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Facilitates completion of repairs and projects that involve multi-disciplines across shops within supervisory responsibility.
  • Works closely with supervisor of other shops and provide back-up support there as needed.
  • Serves as primary troubleshooter for mechanical problems related to carpentry, electrical and general mechanics.
  • Serves as a mentor to foster trades within the shops.
  • Possesses the ability to read mechanical drawings and apply theory of operations to problems
  • Plans and schedules all work operations of the shop unit
  • Organizes, coordinates, and directs the work activities of all subordinates
  • Assigns work requirements, sets deadlines and sequence of operations
  • Maintains balanced workloads for subordinates and shifts work load for effective and continuing operations
  • Reviews and analyzes production costs and personnel utilization records in order to evaluate work progress, control and reduce costs, evaluates continuing problems and directs necessary corrective actions or changes in work methods
  • Responsible for operational and first line supervisory aspects of the carpentry, electrical and maintenance mechanic shops
  • Reference and ensure compliance with guidelines including Veteran Administration Medical Center (VAMC) WRJ Policies and Center Memorandums, VA construction standards, National Fire Protection Association Codes, OSHA, Joint Commission, EPA, Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, Varies; Work Schedule will be discussed during the interview process, to include weekend coverage.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work required for this position requires standing, walking, and/or sitting for long periods of time, climbing up and down stairs and ladders, stooping, bending, and frequently working in cramped and awkward positions. Lift in excess of 40 pounds. Be able to clear snow sidewalks and stairs.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
