Summary

The purpose of this position is to operate patient transport vehicles, including emergency vehicles, patient transport vans/buses and other types transport vehicles, capable of carrying up to 8 or more passengers, to and from VA Medical Center facilities, private healthcare facilities, and other private sector areas like patient homes, railway, bus stations and airports. Incumbent drives predetermined and/or scheduled routes or special runs.

Duties

Help

The duties of this position include, but not limited to:

  • Responsible for safe transport of veterans and other passengers authorized to ride in
    government vehicles.
  • Operates Motor Vehicles requiring a CDL w/Passenger endorsement.
  • Drives automotive vehicles such as passenger sedans, passenger vans, passenger buses,
    pickup trucks and heavy duty trucks with GVWR not exceed 23,999.
  • Makes sure that vehicle is kept in good repair inside and outside.
  • Completes preventative maintenance checks on vehicles prior to operation.
  • Performs monthly written reports of Motor Vehicle Trips Logs and Motor Vehicle Trip
    Tickets.
  • Obeys all traffic signage, signals and lights.
  • Have a working knowledge of traffic regulations and overloading vehicle by its gross vehicle
    weight.
  • Able to load and unload patients in a safe a manner and location.
  • Able to read and follow road signs.
  • Be able to operate and maneuver vehicles with manual, air and power brakes without
    jostling passengers.
  • Be able to select alternative routes to avoid heavy traffic, delays and hazards by using map
    reading skills.
  • Driving proficiency in the terms of safe and expeditious completion of tasks.
  • Be able to perform operational checks such as checking tire pressure, checking fluids, door
    operation, etc..
  • Knowledgeable of hybird and non-gasoline vehicles.
Work Schedule: Tour of duty 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, schedule could varies on agency needed.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/15/2025.

Commercial Driver's License: Applicants must, at a minimum, possess and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and air brake certification issued by A state DMV endorsements with application or you will be rated ineligible. Applicants will be required to submit a copy of their Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Printout (Driving Record) that it is current. Your driving record must show that you have had no traffic violations, no DUI arrests, nor any traffic accidents within the past five years. This document will be required to be submitted before receipt of a tentative job offer.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent must occasionally lift, carry, push or pull objects when delivering the mail from one campus to the other. Exertion is occasional and no more than I0 pounds of force involved. The incumbent sits to drive and walks and stands during the trips. Alertness and good judgment is practiced at all time to ensure a safe trip for veterans. Able to maneuver the longer and heavier vehicles, especially when backing these vehicles up. Patient transport vehicle drivers may be required to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which involves physical exertion and frequent stooping and bending. Patient transport vehicle driver must be able to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which includes physical exertion and frequent stooping, bending, and lifting of patients. Must also be able to load and assist wheelchair patients, often with not assistance.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
