This position is located in the Maintenance and Repair Section of the Engineering Service at Bath VA Medical Center in Bath, NY. The Electrician (High Voltage) is responsible for performing duties of Journeyman Electrician under the general supervision of the Electrician Foreman.

Help

Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Performing maintenance, repair, modification and new installation of all laboratory and x-ray equipment
  • Performing maintenance, repair and modification of the high voltage primary distribution system which is 12,470 volts
  • Performing maintenance and repair and installation of transformers which includes changing high voltage fuses, changing transformer tap settings for proper voltage, securing connections, visual inspection, and cleaning transformer compartments
  • Performing maintenance and repair on high voltage loop switches and is responsible for safe and proper switching procedures and operations
  • Operating, inspecting and maintaining emergency generators throughout the Medical Center
  • Performing maintenance and repair of automatic transfer switches associated with the emergency generators and recording and documenting required operation and maintenance of emergency generators and associate equipment
  • Performing installation, maintenance and repair of secondary distribution electrical systems, systems, three phases and single phase with voltages of 480/277/240/208/120 volts
  • Performing maintenance and repair of hydraulic and traction drive elevators
  • Installing, maintaining and repairing the station cable T.V. system and associated equipment
  • Interpreting and applying electrical wiring diagrams, schematics and as-built electrical drawings for electrical and electronic equipment and systems
  • Installing, maintaining and repairing electronic equipment such as; nurse call systems, fire alarm and intrusion alarm systems and electronic speed drives for motor control
  • Performing installation, maintenance and repair of boiler plant equipment, hospital equipment, canteen equipment and all other operating equipment
  • Applying mechanical skills as well as electrical and electronic skills to perform maintenance and repair of electric wheelchairs and other patient mobility equipment
  • Checking and ensuring proper operation of electrical systems, circuits and equipment
  • Repairing and testing all electrical and electronic systems
  • Planning and laying out the needed routing, placement and arrangement of systems, circuits, controls and equipment
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 08:00 a.m. to 04:30 p.m.

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The Incumbent is required to work from ladders, scaffolds and platforms in hard to reach places, inside and outside. Work is completed from a high reach bucket truck to repair street and all lighting fixtures. Standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions is required. Incumbent lifts and carries weight up to 20 lbs. and occasionally over 20 lbs.

WORK CONDITIONS: The Incumbent's work environment can be dirty, dusty, greasy, noisy and occasionally work has to be done in inclement weather. Exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, strains, burns, and electrical shock may be present. Occasionally work must be completed in man holes, attic spaces and pits. The Incumbent is expected to utilize appropriate personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, helmets, ear muffs, insulated gloves, etc., follow all safety policies and procedures and attend safety training.
