Duties

Help
  • Responsible for evaluation, transcription and interpretation of a physician’s prescription order for appropriateness of drug therapy to include evaluation of the drug selected and the regimen prescribed (dose, frequency, duration).
  • Develops pharmacotherapeutic regimens for especially difficult or complex cases with the attending physician.
  • Exercises ability to competently manage problems and is subject to institution-wide medical review of practice patterns.
  • Prepares, compounds, and dispenses pharmaceuticals for patients of all ages, conduct education for patients and healthcare professionals, and ensure proper handling and dispensing of investigational drugs.
  • Prescribes medications as authorized per command-approved protocols.
  • Serves as first line supervisor to pharmacists performing primarily clinical roles within the inpatient pharmacy, exercising the full range of personnel management responsibilities over subordinate positions.
  • Serves as the expert on pharmaceuticals, pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapeutics, and pharmacy education and training.
  • Use extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals, provides authoritative instructions, advice, and assistance to prescribing and dispensing officials.
  • Serves on a variety of boards, committees, and other bodies representing the Inpatient Pharmacy Service and the Pharmacy Department and provides authoritative input on all pharmacy-related matters.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires a Tier 3 security investigation with Childcare Background Checks.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical.
  • The incumbent may be required to work on any day or shift, including PMs, night, weekends, holidays, or on an “on call” basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position is designated Mission Essential and may be appointed Essential Personnel status during inclement/weather/emergencies.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
  • In accordance with BUMEDINST 1500.15C employees assigned to or subject to being assigned to duties providing direct patient care, either diagnostic or therapeutic must possess and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • One-year supervisory probationary period required. A one-year probationary period is required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Basic Requirement for Supervisory Pharmacist:

Education: A doctoral degree in Pharmacy that is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirement above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0660 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

Licensure: A current, active, valid, and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, a territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Medical Requirement: Must be able to distinguish basic colors.

Specialized Experience: One year of professional pharmacy experience which includes dispensing medication, providing pharmacy functions in a medical treatment facility performing duties such as developing pharmacokinetics and pharmacotherapeutic regimens, as well as overseeing personnel in a pharmacy. This definition of experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12)
