Help
  • Supervises the work of packing and repacking equipment and supplies in support of wildland fire operations.
  • Responsible for outlining day-to-day operations, prioritizing workload, and delegating assigned work.
  • Implements established scheduling of personnel for multiple functional areas to expedite the movement of materials in accordance with priorities, scheduling, refurbishment guidelines and space allocation plans.
  • Performs alongside others to coordinate efforts, establish pace, facilitate tasks, ensure deadline accomplishment, and correct work methods to complete standard and specialized packaging, kits building, and hazardous material handling.
  • Responsible for short- and long-term planning to accomplish the duties of loading and unloading returned equipment and supplies, and determining best practices for routing material through testing, repair and refurbishment processing.
  • Makes sure materials are available, and reports to supervisor the status and progress of work.
  • Uses and maintains various types of equipment, such as packaging and preservations equipment, heat sealer, shrink wrapper, and stapling machine.
  • Operates a variety of material handling equipment and vehicles such as forklifts, electric stock pickers, pallet jacks, and stake-bed trucks.
  • Utilizes an automated inventory program to query storage locations and perform transactions.
  • Provides administrative supervision for subordinates that includes: leave approval, informal complaint and grievance resolution, work performance reviews, and award and training recommendations.

  • Supervisory Probationary Period: If you are selected for this position, you will be required to serve a one year supervisory/managerial probationary period if one has not previously been completed.
  • The incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain certifications to operate a forklift in a warehouse environment.
  • Incumbent is required to complete formal course training in Hazmat Shipping and Handling every three years.
  • The incumbent must be able to maintain a valid Driver’s License. Work may require the occasional or regular use of a forklift and driving light/medium duty vehicles.
  • You must pass a pre-employment physical.

Qualifications

OPM Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations will be used in determining your qualifications. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials, that you possess the skill level that has equipped you with the particular job elements to successfully perform the duties of Materials Handler Supervisor.

Physical Demands:
Performs work on hard surfaces and in areas that require frequent standing, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequent lifting and carrying of parts, equipment and packed containers that weigh up to 40 pounds (8 kilograms). Heavier items are moved with weight-handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Required to be available to work long hours on short notice and be available for duty on weekends, holidays and nights.

Work Environment:
Typically works in well lighted, heated and ventilated areas. Occasionally works outside or in areas that are drafty and poorly lighted. The work is sometimes dusty, dirty and greasy. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes and bruises. When working with packaging products, chemicals or petroleum products may be exposed to noxious fumes, skin irritants and flammable chemicals. In certain work situations involving hazardous materials, wears protective clothing, respirators, and other specialized protective devices, in addition to basic protective equipment (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, safety shoes, and earplugs).

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Federal Wage System positions (WG, WL, or WS).
