This position is located in the Facilities Management Division (AFM), Operations Department of the National Gallery of Art. NGA houses and safeguards priceless art treasures which are required to be maintained at a relatively constant temperature and humidity in order to protect their materials and prolong their life. Therefore, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) requirements dictate that temperature and relative humidity is maintained to critical specifications at all times. This is a third shift position. Candidates must be able to work the other two shifts as needed. 

The A/C Equipment Mechanic will repair, inspect, operate, service, troubleshoot and maintain building mechanical equipment, air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation and heating systems, and necessary action to restore any electrical plumbing or control (BAS) systems when an emergency breakdown occurs.

In this position you will: 

  • Be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical equipment associated with heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems.
  • Be responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of the various air conditioning and refrigeration systems that operate with various types of AC compressors.
  • Receive written work orders, oral instructions, blueprints, and sketches indicating the nature of inspection, maintenance, repair or installation of mechanical system components.
  • Use and properly operate an Ohm, Amp, Watt, and Voltage meters, measuring instruments and testing equipment such as flowmeters, recording meters, micrometers, psychrometer, velometers, and electronic leak detectors.
  • Service power sources, which involve tightening connections; make splices; insulating exposed wires; cleaning and lubricating moving parts; testing for proper operation, and replacing items such as belts, fans, and fuses, coils, electric motors, electric contactors, relays, and magnetic starters.

  • This is a third shift position. Must be able to work the other two shifts.

Must be able to lift own weight. Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolding, platforms and other hard-to-reach places. Must be able to walk, climb, crawl, kneel, stoop, bend, push and pull for extended periods. Must be able to carry up to 40 pounds. Must be able to work in confined space areas. Must be able to work inside and outside, in all kinds of weather. Must be able to work in noisy, dirty, dusty and greasy areas. Must be able to work at heights of 30 feet or more, and in confined areas. Must be able to work safely in areas with rotating machinery and parts. Works with and around hazardous materials and chemicals. May be required to wear earplugs, goggles, masks, and gloves. Work subject to noxious gases, fumes, cuts, bruises, scrapes, burns from steam and hot water piping and electrical shock. Exposure to repeated, prolonged, or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin and internal organs.
