Help

Major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Operates a variety of passenger vehicles, which can carry up to 8 or more passengers. Driving pre-determined and/or scheduled routes.
  • Arrives at and departs from pick-up and discharge points at scheduled times. Proceeds only to designated areas or hospital; cooperates in a coordinated, constantly flowing effort.
  • Secures cargo to prevent damage to contents during transport and ensures that the vehicle is not loaded beyond the maximum capacity.
  • Operate multi-passenger, wheel chair equipped vans/shuttles and vehicles equipped with special purpose accessory equipment. Know how to use the power devices that operate van lifts and skill in manipulating a variety of controls and understanding equipment gauges, engine fluid level instrument and warning signals. .
  • Transport patients in such a manner that ensures maximum comfort, prevents shock, allows freedom of breathing, avoids danger to the patient; knows and abides by laws and traffic regulations. When transporting patients must be able to load and unload patient in a safe manner.
  • Assist medical personnel with loading/unloading litter-borne patients in an emergency situation.
  • Maintain monthly driver logs, indicating equipment used, time/duration of operation, mileage, fueling, and preventive maintenances performed.
  • Maintains cleanliness and professional appearance of both the in and outside of the vehicle.
  • Completes all maintenance service records to document activities.
  • Provides courtesy rides to staff, Veterans, and visitors as needed to and from parking lots or garages and/or to and from buildings on the facility campus.
  • Assists in areas like the warehouse to receive, store, and move materials and equipment.
  • Providing the VTS program office a manifest log of Veterans who were transported daily.
  • Exercises emergency procedures properly, prevents accidents; engages in safe driving practices; knows and uses proper operating speeds; knows importance of gentle driving, starting and stopping; knows the relationships of speed to "reaction distance" braking distance and stopping distance; makes proper use of lights and sirens. Makes all accident reports required by VA and State Motor Vehicle for submission through channels to the safety office.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday thru Saturday, various shifts between 5:00am - 08:00pm

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Physical effort is moderate. Work requires reaching, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Associated duties require stooping, bending, and climbing. Lifts and carries objects weighing up to 40 pounds and heavier objects with assistance. Considerable physical efforts may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing a fuse on an open highway.

Working Conditions: Works irregular tours when needed and as emergencies arise, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. The employee may be required to work overtime, irregular shifts on a scheduled or emergency basis. May be exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures and all types of weather conditions while working outdoors. May be exposed to long hours of driving. Work will include lifting, pulling, pushing, stooping, climbing and working in cramped positions. Incumbent may be required to perform physical labor in the upkeep of facility and grounds. Required to work under various weather and road conditions, to operate snowplow and sand/salt spreader during icy and snowy conditions. Works outside in all kinds of weather and inside in areas that may be dusty, drafty, and noisy. The equipment and tasks involved at this level frequently require special care to avoid serious injury. Responsible for following all safety rules, regulations, and traffic signs. Special precautions must be taken to avoid injury. Personal protective equipment such as hard hats, gloves, etc., must be worn when conditions justify their use

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
