Duties

Help
  • Assists the Chief Engineer with Performing routine maintenance to all dredge equipment .
  • Performs maintenance and repairs to all mechanical and electrical equipment used in operation of the vessel.
  • Makes periodic inspections of all mechanical equipment to ensure correct performance, repairs, and maintenance.
  • Ensures that all tests and analyses are conducted in connection with the operation of machinery.
  • Inspects all operating machinery to ensure proper functioning.
  • Prepares purchasing requisitions and maintenance status updates for machinery spare parts.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Assignment is aboard a floating plant with limited exceptions, the applicant is responsible for their own transportation to and from their duty station.
  • Tour of Duty may be 7 days on, 7 days off, 12 hours per day; 8 days on, 6 days off, 10 hours per day; 4 days on, 3 days off, 10 hours per day; 14 days on, 14 days off, 12 hours a day.
  • Position requires pre-employment and periodic physical examination.
  • Position requires employee to maintain a valid drivers license.
  • Position meets the criteria for random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program .

Screen Out Element - Ability to perform the most difficult and complex duties of routine vessel maintenance and repais, including diesel engines, generators, motors, starters, and plumbing, heating, ventilation, electrical distribution, filters, and various other similar and related mechanical equipment. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.


SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR:

This position requires applicant to possess a current U.S. Coast Guard License for Chief Engineer, limited, for 3000 HP or greater. Do you have a valid current U.S. Coast Guard License for Chief Engineer, limited for 3000 HP or greater? (Must be included with application packet to be considered)

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

RESPONSIBILITY:
Works under the general supervision of the Chief Engineer or Assistant Chief Engineer, who makeswork assignments on a functional basis in addition to specific job assignments. Minor and routinerepairs are subject only to general supervision, but major repairs are performed under directsupervision. Completed work is spot checked by the Chief Engineer who makes periodic inspectionsto observe the operation, condition, cleanliness, and orderliness of equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed inside and outside, subjecting employee to various climatic conditions.Considerable muscular effort is required in making general and technical repairs, and in walkingover the vessel decks and up down stairways and ladders. Hazards encountered are burns, injuryfrom moving machinery, electric shock, falls from stairs, ladders, and on icy or slippery decks,excessive heat and noise, fumes, dirty and greasy equipment, and moving machinery and, in theevent of collision, there is the danger of being thrown against or into moving equipment, anddanger of drowning if vessel takes on water. Incumbent works regularly in areas where noiseexceeds 80 decibels and is exposed to the effects of paints, acids, and solvents.
