Help
  • Plan the use of subordinate workers, equipment, facilities and materials on a week­-to-week, project-by-project, month-by-month.
  • Provide technical direction and/or help in accomplishing difficult, new, or substantially changed work steps, processes, methods, procedures, and operational sequences.
  • Maintain work reports and records as relates to work of site staff supervised and initiates recommendations for promotion.
  • Exercise full regulatory authority in controlling river traffic through the facility.
  • Responsible for the safety of property, personnel, and public at the installation/site.
  • Obtain and furnish information on river conditions, navigation, operating schedules, planned shipments, vessel movements, etc.
  • Assign and oversee work of 12–18 employees involved in lock and dam operating and site maintenance activities; and support, implement, and explain management programs.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

  • This position requires work to be in inclement weather.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
  • Individual Districts may determine this position to be Mission Essential based on site-specific conditions. A designation of "Mission Essential" will be communicated by management to the incumbent(s) if applicable.
  • Incumbent may be required to have an American Red Cross Standard First Aid card, CPR, and/or AED in good standing and/or wear a prescribed uniform based on site specific requirements.
  • Incumbent may be required to have a valid state driver's license based on job-related, site- specific requirements.
  • Incumbent may be required to acquire and maintain appropriate Corps of Engineers equipment operating licenses based on site specific requirements.
  • Employees are required to observe established safe working procedures. Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Lock and Dam Equipment Repairer Supervisor without more than normal supervision. I am skilled in 1) planning the use of subordinate workers, equipment, facilities and materials; 2) assigning work to individual employees involved in lock and dam operating and site maintenance activities; and 3) performing the full range of repairs at lock and dam sites. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed..- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: Work requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing and crouching. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. May occasionally lift and carry items weighing over 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hands and feet, and also of legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment in confined areas such as manholes, enclosed switch gear structures, or on overhead structures. Climbs ladders and poles.
  • Working Conditions: Works inside and outside, subject to changing climatic conditions, loud noises, prolonged standing, falling, water hazards, drowning, cuts and bruises. Works in cramped places and is exposed to dirt, grease, fumes, and dust; works around heavy construction machinery, with and around power shop equipment. Occasionally will work behind bulkheads or in tunnels below water level.
