Duties

Help

  • Operates one or more types of heavy equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth to rough specifications on constructions sites.
  • Maintains, repairs, and constructs rigid pavements or similar cement and concrete surfaces.
  • Maintains, repairs, and constructs flexible roads, pavements, parking areas, airdromes, bike paths, or similar surfaces of asphalt.
  • Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.
  • Uses and maintains tools and equipment.

  • A current valid CLASS "A" CDL license is required by law to operate combination vehicles over 26,000 lbs with a towed unit that weighs over 10,000 lbs "gross vehicle weight" for the position.
  • May be required to train and or guide lower graded employees
  • Hand, foot, and eye coordination, good depth perception and a high degree of concentration are required in handling and manipulating these controls to perform the work of this position.
  • This position requires a physical and medical examination
  • The employee frequently lifts, carries, and handles items weighing up to 40 pounds. When performing cement work, employee is frequently required to perform heavy lifting up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to pass a color vision test in order to operate a vehicle in a Controlled Movement Area (CMA).
  • The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle, valid driver’s license required.
  • Emergency overtime may be required.
  • Shift work may be required.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5700- Transportation Mobile Equipment Operation family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Operation of Motor Vehicles Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) Ability to Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle) Reliability and Dependability as an Engineering Equipment Operator Leader.

Ideal Candidate: Someone with integrity who takes pride in their work, also is a TEAM player, works great with other members! Good physical stamina and strength to stand, bend, lift, and carry heavy and bulky items. Excellent time management and organizational skills to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines. Knowledge of safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
