Duties

Help
  • You will interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and other instructions to plan your work.
  • You will inspect damaged aircraft structures to determine the most effective repair methods.
  • You will disassemble and remove sheet metal and composite structures from aircraft.
  • You will lay out, cut, bend, and form sheet metal to fabricate and repair aircraft parts.
  • You will perform structural modifications to aircraft based on engineering updates.
  • You will precisely drill, fit, and rivet new or repaired parts during assembly and installation.
  • You will operate a wide range of fabrication machinery, including press brakes, shears, and forming machines.
  • You will finish parts by deburring, filing, and smoothing surfaces, applying chemical treatments as needed.
  • You will inspect your completed work to ensure it meets all quality and safety specifications.
  • You will train and mentor other mechanics, sharing your expertise to support the team.

  • This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This position requires rotating shift work.
  • This position requires exposure to high noise levels.
  • This position normally works at ground level and may require climbing which could exceed heights of 20 feet or more. Employees will be required to participate in a medical surveillance program to include noise, sight, respirator, etc.
  • This position includes physical exertion requiring heavy lifting and carrying of objects up to 45 pounds. Any weight to be lifted in excess of 40 pounds will not be attempted unaided.
  • This position will be performed standing and sitting for a period of up to 6 hours. At times, pulling, pushing, stooping and reaching are required with moderate kneeling, bending, and squatting for 1-2 hours.
  • This position requires near vision correctable at 14" to Jaeger 2 and far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other. Must be able to distinguish colors and have depth perception.
  • The environmental factors of this position are working outside and inside, excessive heat, cold, noise, dust, vibration, working in confined spaces up to 4 hours per shift, working around machinery and moving objects.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the screen out listed below.
This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out for this position is performing the following tasks:
1) Fabricating, modifying, and repairing aircraft sheet metal and composite structures by interpreting technical drawings, manuals, and other specifications. 2) Performing complex layouts and patterns to form, shape, and cut sheet metal using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and shop machinery (such as press brakes, rollers, and shears). 3) Assembling, installing, and aligning aircraft structural components, including drilling, fitting, and riveting parts to meet precise technical requirements.
