Duties

Help
  • Range Technicians work under the supervision and guidance of professional range or natural resource specialists related to monitoring rangeland conditions. Ensures grazing permits and leases are in compliance.
  • Inspects grazing allotments, forwards issues to higher graded lead or supervisor. Counts livestock and reports on utilization and grazing impact. Maps out areas of use. Inspects range improvement and makes reports.
  • Provide technical support and assistance in range conservation, range management, and range improvement.
  • Identify needed range improvements, assists with monitoring agreements and permit projects for conformance to specifications.
  • Coordinates pre-inventory mapping (soils, vegetation, etc.) by preliminary delineation in geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Initiates and conducts range inventory surveys according to accepted standards and techniques.

Qualifications

GS-5: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience may include conducting preliminary reconnaissance of range areas to select possible sites for re-seeding, noxious weed control, and heavy use areas in need of better water distribution or identifying and when feasible repairing damaged barbed wire fences, leaky pipelines and troughs, faulty cattleguards and reporting when cattle are in the wrong location;
-OR-
Successful completion of a full four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with a major forestry, range management, agriculture or a subject-matter field directly related to the position or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of the following courses: forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in math is creditable;

A combination of experience and education as described above. To compute this, first determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience requirement; then determine your undergraduate education as a percentage of the education requirement; add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal 100 percent to qualify.

GS-6: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 level. Examples of specialized experience may include assisting with range improvement projects and/or other vegetation management activities to include vegetation monitoring; collecting resource data; assisting with the detection of trespass issues for rangeland monitoring activities; and communicating with stakeholders to resolve conflicts or deviations from licensed use of rangelands.

Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position;

A combination of experience and education to meet total experience: A combination of experience and education to meet total experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. To compute this, first determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience requirement; then determine your education as a percentage of the education requirement; add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal 100 percent to qualify.

GS-7: One (1) year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-6 level. Examples of specialized experience are: Assisting with range improvement projects and/or other vegetation management activities to include vegetation monitoring; Collecting data to determine causes of variances, and applicability of data; Assisting with the detection and/or investigation of trespass issues for rangeland monitoring activities; and communicating with stakeholders to resolve conflicts or deviations from licensed use of rangelands.

Physical Demands / Work Environment: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. Carefully adheres to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
