Duties

Help

As an Archives Technician, you will:

  • Pull and refile original archival records
  • Evaluate the physical condition of records, and determine appropriate preservation or holdings maintenance actions, where needed
  • Perform detailed and complex arrangement of archival materials following a plan (or guidance) approved by a supervisor. Describe archival materials in accordance with policy, including improving Catalog description issues by standardization
  • Operate one or more digitization devices to capture image files of a range of materials, including loose and bound paper documents of all sizes; photographs; or maps. Capture metadata using various software tools
  • Provide reference assistance by using complex finding aid systems and related archival sources, in both electronic and analog formats
  • Use a variety of software applications to conduct quality checks, enter data, communicate with colleagues, and submit administrative information

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.   • A one year probationary period may be required.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon supervisory certification that continued employment will benefit the Federal Service; the certification will occur no less than 30 days before the end of the probationary/trial period.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
  • The work is mostly sedentary, however the incumbentmust be physically able to perform the duties of this position. Physical demands may include climbing caster-equipped ladders, maneuvering on catwalks, moving heavy carts of records, and handling boxes of records stored up to 15 feet above the floor and typically weighing 50 pounds, occasionally more. The work may also demand considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending and lifting.

Specialized Experience for the GS-7: You must have at least one year of experience at the GS-6 level or equivalent that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:

  • Performing archival or related functions. (Examples may include monitoring, pulling and refiling records, reference, arrangement and description, and/or holdings maintenance) AND
  • Experience with records management. AND
  • Communicating with various audiences in a professional setting.
