The incumbent of this position will be assigned to a Transportation Team in Engineering Service at the Tuskegee Campus at Central Alabama Health Care System. Routine trip assignments are rotated to all Motor Vehicle Operators that hold a CDL with passenger endorsement
Montgomery to Tuskegee Shuttle, VA Atlanta, VA Birmingham, CBOC Columbus, Fort Benning, Monroeville, Dothan and Fort Rucker Wiregrass Clinic and routine appointments at various private health care facilities.

Help

Major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Under the direct supervision of the Transportation Supervisor, receives verbal and written assignments from the supervisor or dispatcher.
  • Responsible for the safe transport of veterans and other passengers authorized to ride in government vehicles.
  • Drives the following vehicles: Automotive vehicles such as passenger sedans, passenger vans, passenger buses, pickĀ­up trucks, and heavy-duty trucks with GVWR not exceeding 23,999.
  • Completes preventative maintenance on vehicle(s) prior to operating.
  • Documents the information according to Transportation policies and procedures.
  • Operates vehicles that use flex-fuel, gasoline, and diesel, and care should be taken to fuel vehicles properly.
  • Performs other duties related to vehicle maintenance, such as checking fluid levels, taking cars for oil changes, washing vehicles, and transporting vehicles for repairs/maintenance.
  • Records accurate, legible, detailed documentation about each trip and turns completed paperwork into the Transportation Office promptly.
  • Transport patients in such a manner that minimizes disturbance to the affected part and ensures maximum comfort, prevents shock, allows freedom of breathing, avoids further danger to the patient, and knows and abides by laws and traffic regulations. When transporting patients, it is essential to be able to load and unload them safely.
  • Provides timely and courteous service to external and internal customers of the VA Medical Center. Listens to concerns and provides the customer with the necessary information or directs them to the right assistance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
DESIGNATED DRUG -TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing-designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use before appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/29/2025.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

LICENSURE REQUIREMENT: For this position you must possess a current unexpired Alabama class "CDL" driver's license with passenger and air breaks endorsement.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligible are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Demands: Incumbent must occasionally lift, carry, push or pull objects when delivering the mail from one campus to the other. Exertion is occasional and no more than IO lbs of force involved. The incumbent sits to drive and walks and stands during the trips. Alertness and good judgment is practiced at all time to ensure a safe trip for veterans.

Able to maneuver the longer and heavier vehicles, especially when backing these vehicles up. Patient transport vehicle drivers may be required to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which involves physical exertion and frequent stooping and bending.

Patient transport vehicle driver must be able to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which includes physical exertion and frequent stooping, bending, and lifting of patients. Must also be able to load and assist wheelchair patients, often with not assistance.

Working Conditions: Incumbent is required to work outside in all kinds of weather i.e., hot, extreme cold, rain and mud. Driver operates vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Operators drive in traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. Gas and oil fumes are present in both operation and repair of equipment. In performing duties incumbent is subject to cuts and bruises loading or unloading items for transport from mailroom. Incumbents may have daily contact with tubercular, psychiatric, and other handicapped patients.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
